The Table Hopping feature in the Sunday New York Post put the spotlight on the International Bar, the old haunt on First Avenue between Seventh Street and St. Mark's that was brought back to life this past June. Good choice by the Post. Jeremiah profiled proprietors Shawn and Molly back in June. Oh, and the Table Hopping feature doesn't appear to be online. So here it is:
Hey! Thanks for the post. I was a regular at the International, when it was on St. Mark's. Knew Mary and Michael Petruno... the whole crowd.
ReplyDeleteThanks to NY Post, the yunnies will now be invading this joint.
ReplyDelete1. no t.v.

3. no mirrors in the bathrooms
they may invade, but they wont stay long.

Same with my favorite pub -- Swift's Hibernian on 4th street bet. Lafayette and Broadway. Its patrons used to be artists, musicians, literary people, bohemians, etc. They even have (or used to have) a Seisiún on Tuesday afternoons. Nowadays, if one go to Swift's, it's like going to a bar in the UES, full of yunnies & yuppies, who, some of them, don't even know who Swift is. I guess, my point is, the yunnies are there to stay, as much as I don't want them to. Besides, the International Bar was featured in the NY Post, which endorsed McCain. Therefore, the patrons at the Bowery Wine Bar will be spilling at the International Bar. I wouldn't even be surprised if the young Republicans start having their meeting there.
I agree with the above. There is sadly a long list of bars now in New York that should be cool, based on their history or decor, that aren't because of the crowd.
ReplyDeleteI built the door between the bar and the garden in ‘87/‘88. I really liked Michael, I wonder what happened to him?
ReplyDeleteInteresting to read all of these comments . . . Paul Daly, I remember you and the beautiful door you built between bar & garden . . . sadly, Michael passed away . . . 1989 . . . I was his girlfriend (Mary)
ReplyDeleteway back when . . . incredible memories of a time long gone . . .

And let's not forget Lucky's on Avenue B between 10th and 11th, owned by the fabulous Abby Ehmann, long-time EV resident. Great CD jukebox filled with classic rock, punk and 80s hits, vintage seating, low-key crowds, and periodic events thrown for charity. Lucky's, Mona's and Lucy's are the only bars in the nabe I bother with, and cos it's closest to where I live, I'm usually to be found there.
