Was surprised to find the always reliable Ryan's Irish Pub on Second Avenue near Ninth Street closed the other day...
However, a source told me this is just temporary, and that they're doing a little "remodeling." Still, you'd think the Ryan's folks, who also own Bull McCabe's and the Thirsty Scholar, would put a sign on the door telling what's going on now...
Used to come here often and get a pint at 10 or 11am on a weekday AM, until Ryan's Irish Pub became a tourist and NYU student haven, especially in the summer.
ReplyDeleteNow, they don't open until around 4pm and kitchen doesn't open 'til 5pm. At least on weekdays The staff used to be Irish with the brogue and all. Nowadays, the wait staff are from Mid-west. Though the waitress (from Indiana) was nice friendly.
Dated a waitress there back in 2000/2001. She moved to the UPE and started to be waitress at Trinity pub on 85th street bet. 2nd & 3rd ave. I might join her (move to UPE, that is) soon.
Everyone is moving to the Upper East Side. I work downtown, so I moved to Battery Park City. There is nothing by way of shopping/dining (save for a great Korean Place and a decent Mexican place both just inside the West Side highway), the park more than makes up for it. The whole area is green and homeless free. The people at the dog run are all nice. There are lots of families here but few obnoxious teenagers. There are Irish women working at the White Horse as well as Moran's, which is in between the Mexican and Korean places. Moran's also serves decent pub grub, although expensive. I have never had a non-Irish bar maid at Moran's. Battery Park City also lacks the frat boy atmosphere of the Upper East Side. They do have better dining and more women.
ReplyDeleteYou really think you might move Esquared?
ReplyDeleteAnd everything you said about Ryan's is right on...
Yeah, might move to UES:
ReplyDeleteno hotels (although there are still building condos, but not as much in the EV/LES);
no tourists, NYU/New School kids, or B&T's on the weekends/weeknights;
although it is filled with fratboys, they're not as loud or obnoxious in their own neighborhood, whereby when they come to EV/LES, they feel they have the right to trash the place, since they don't live here;
quiet tree lined streets (outside that pub stretch of 72nd st-96th st. bet. 1st & 2nd aves.);
it has become TOO depressing to stay in the EV, with all the transients and the disappearing establishments that made it great living in the EV.
Or, I can just take anonymous' suggestion and move to FIDi/Battery Park City. Regardless, it probably won't be the EV -- need a new scenery.
