99X is closing
As their slogan reads, "Outfitting the Underground since 1978."
I also looked at the store's Twitter account...
A shame. And I rarely walk on this stretch of 10th Street between Fourth Avenue and Third Avenue, a dead zone of empty storefronts....
...and stalled development...

ReplyDeleteGodammit!
I second that.
ReplyDeleteNOOOOO!!!!
is wiz kid management still in that building? especially now that the strokes are on hiatus...
ReplyDeleteSo, so depressing. I remember I had a mod friend who introduced me to the place ... this was like, 1988! The last thing I bought there was a pair of vegetarian combat boots. That was about 1999. I feel terrible.
ReplyDelete99X, you will be missed.
:(
this is totally awful
ReplyDeletethis is totally awful
ReplyDeleteThis is sad news. Is there any possibility of the store re-opening in a new location?
ReplyDeleteSo awful that I never saw any of you in there on my walk back from work 5 days a week for the past 1.5 years.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 11:05, c'mon, don't be a jerk. I did shop at 99X long ago, but I outgrew dressing punk well over a decade ago. One would assume that a new generation of mod and punk and skater kids could keep things going, not that the old customers would be required to dress like their teenage selves into perpetuity.
ReplyDeleteBut the neighborhood's "kids" are now mostly UGG and sweatpant and sports jersey wearing NYU idiots. Blame them -- for being uncool!
Fine. Sorry : (
ReplyDelete"and soon the city will be filled with Starbucks, Duane Reades and banks"...uh, am I missing some irony here? It already is!
ReplyDeletewhatever, i started shopping there in 1995 and still have been...well, i guess until now.
ReplyDeleteso, anon11:05pm, shush.
