Bagels for Avenue A?
Last week we mentioned that 165 Avenue would be turned into a restaurant/bar, former site of the Monk Thrift Shop....
Well, per a reader comment:
I heard from someone who worked on the construction of Diablo that this next door place will sell bagels.
Another tipster said that it is going to be a shop from the same people who own the Bagel World stores in Brooklyn.

It's about time! Ever since David's closed (and remains sadly vacant), ya can't get a good bagel in the nabe!
ReplyDeleteI had my last decent bagel in NYC in 1979.
ReplyDeleteI would welcome a bagel shop.
ReplyDeleteWell ya can, Anonymous, on 1st between 15th and 16th is the Orthodox Jewish place that sells great fresh bagels, but I agree, David's is sorely missed. And it sure would be nice to have something other than a bar in this location. Carbs, not cosmos, that's what I say.
ReplyDeleteA bagel shop and not a bar! That would be great! This is the kind of business we need in the EV.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Anon above... this is long overdue! I'm still bitter over the loss of David's and can't live on stale bodega bagels alone.
ReplyDeletenative bean?
ReplyDeletemuch better bagels than a bar, but i wish we could get something besides food/bar/bank every time a mom and pop dies...
Lisa, I'd love to use that place on 1st between 15th and 16th, but unfortunately, it's closed on Saturdays and Sundays - my two usual "bagel days." How does it compare with David's?
ReplyDeleteChris - I knew they were closed Saturday, since they're Orthodox, didn't know about Sunday, I usually go later on week nights to get my fix cos they're open until about 10. Their egg everything bagel, which I've never seen anywhere else, is terrific, and as a comparison with David's I would say they are just as good and fresh, also slightly larger. A bit more expensive than David's, tho. To compare with others, they're better than H&H by far, and about on par with Ess-a-Bagel. Hope this info helps!
ReplyDeleteBeen in NYC 13 years and have never had a bagel. I dunno why. No reason. This is on my block, so if it goes in I'll finally get my chance!
ReplyDeleteLisa and Chris -- David's Bagels is now just a bit further north on 1st Avenue, btw 18th and 19th I think. I know it feels like I'm walking to The Bronx when I make the schlep but it's worth it.
ReplyDeleteVH McKenzie -- Yeah, I make that trek every now and then. I guess it just seems like a bit of a walk for a bagel. Maybe when the 1st Avenue bike lane is all finished, I'll do it more often, but even then, carrying my bike up and down two flights of stairs for a bagel also seems like a bit much.
ReplyDeleteWhat can I say? I'm lazy. And hungry.
This is great news, I hope it's true and the bagels are warm and delicious and that there are also BIALYS - the great and oniony carb that is generally ignored, but one of my very favorites.
ReplyDeleteAnd really if you're going to walk all the way to David's, might as well go the extra to Ess A Bagel.
