ConEd kills a tree

Speaking of First Avenue... I honestly meant to post this about a month ago... So, there was that steam leak at the northeast corner of First Avenue and 11th Street... went on 24/7 for months...(ConEd told nervous residents that there was no asbestos here...)

In late June, ConEd finished up the job... leaving behind a dead tree where the steampipe was working...

Here's what the tree used to look like...

  1. And of course Con Ed will claim they had nothing to do with it whatsoever. They're never at fault, don'tcha know?

  2. I'm glad you wrote about this. It's a shame about the tree. The steam was pouring out of the street for over a month. Can it really take ConEd that long to fix something ? It seems like when they fix something they always make sure they leave behind something to break a few months down the road (not unlike a car mechanic).

  3. I live across from this tree and it breaks my heart to see it dead. Trouble is, now that it's dead, who's responsible for removing it? Inquiring minds...

  4. Anon 12:40 - Call the Parks Department at 311, explain the situation and request a new tree. They're the only ones that can deal with the situation. You'll have to wait a while, but they're pretty good about honoring requests.

  5. i originally put in the original complaint about the steam with 311, they contacted the parks department, forrestry, about 3-4 weeks ago. i was told that they had put out an inspection request (to make sure the tree was dead?) and there was no further information available.
like with con edison's "we've created a committee" that had no name nor chair - i forwarded the information to cb#3 district manager. the board did quickly get con edison to fix the leak. (there is a liaison from con edison that deals with elected officials and the like, but nobody that lives in the area can talk to them, gee!)
let's see how they do with the tree.
