Noted
Just noticed that Diablo Royale Este put up a Cinco de Mayo banner on the property that belongs to the coming-soon Tompkins Square Bagel next door ...

I wish they'd get fined.
ReplyDeleteTompkins Square Bagel - could this place be *taking* any longer to open? What the hell are they building in there, a recreation of St. Paul's Cathedral?
ReplyDeleteThey should change the name to Shangri-La Bagels, cos it's just as mythical.
Hello Lisa. Just writing to let you know that we should be open in about 4 weeks. It has definitely taken much longer than we had hoped. The main problem was the place was a little old and beat up and also had none of the infrastructure needed to support a food business. We literally had to build the place out from scratch. So we've been stuck doing fun things like digging out the basement to lay pipes, building air ducts , knocking out walls, etc. All the while dealing with the gazillion permits you need from the buildings dept. and also, trying to be quiet/respectful of our neighbors. We were presented with options to get open quicker but we chose to do things the right/respectful way. Sometimes that mean slowing it down even though you much rather be blasting through as quick as possible. Hopefully , we are going to be a place the neighborhood loves and enjoys for many years.
ReplyDelete+1 with what (Chris P?) said. I live on this block and they haven't made a peep and we are very thankful for that. You'd never know anything was going on and we are grateful neighbors.
ReplyDeleteSuffice to say, everyone is absolutely geeked about the bagels coming! Especially me, as I've never had one before (13 years in NY, some things are worth waiting for).
Can't wait for the Grand Opening!
Speak for yourself Shawn I live at 165 Avenue A. The non stop rennovation coming from this place has been a nightmare and as you know this is one of the worst landlord management teams in the East Village Westbrook Associates/Magnum aka Ben Shaoul. I haven't lived here for all that long but the non stop construction at 165 Avenue A between the commercial space and all the work in the apartments has been unbearable. It's been hell and now they are jacking up my rent and not renewing my lease.
ReplyDelete@Shawn Chittle: You've never had a bagel? That's crazy-talk! I want to be there when you have your first one and document it with a photo!
ReplyDeleteDude, sorry. Umm, I heard Wall St has nice places with gyms. Spread the news. Apartments with elevators, same price as EV, with gyms. Crime is up East of 1st. Bad news East of 1st. Bad, bad news.
ReplyDeleteYay! I can't wait to have a bagel place right around the corner from home. So excited for it to open!
ReplyDeleteBAGELS
ReplyDeleteIt's true Marty. Grew up on donuts and Pop-Tarts, bagels were my Grandparents thing, not mine.
14 years in NYC, and I just never took it up to try one. I have no idea why, but I guess its like why I missed certain episodes of Seinfeld on purpose - to save them for a rainy day.
165 RENOVATIONS
It's normally my policy not to respond to anonymous comments, but since ya called me out, I do hear ya loud and clear on the time it has taken, but it has been explained it will all be over soon.
I'm very sorry about your situation and of course I know all about Benny Shaoul, a schmuck if I ever saw one.
How has living above Diablo been? I've heard they have not been sticking to their stipulations for closing the back up? I think the curfew is 11pm and they have been ignoring that?
Good luck sir (or ma'am as the case may be).
@Shawn Chittle: I grew up on the same thing, but in July of 1993 I moved to the Upper West Side of New York from Peoria, Illinois and on my second day in New York had a bagel at H&H. A magical time!
