Things that go clunk-clunk, CLUNK! in the night (and day) on East Sixth Street

Here are some signs on apartment buildings along Sixth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

The signs provide a detailed report of the situation ...

... a "noisy manhole cover."

"[A]s the weather has changed, the gasket seal that's supposed to prevent movement of the manhole cover has disintegrated, and now the noise problem has grown completely deafening. If you live in an apartment facing the street, and live at or near 335 East 6th Street, you are likely being driven crazy by the sound of the rattling manhole cover."

And here's what you can do about it...

  1. It's all George's fault. He didn't go over there regularly to exercise the gaskets. (Seinfeld reference)

  3. I have this same problem outside my building. It shakes the whole house, esp' when the big trucks head up Bowery at 4-6am. Back in the fall I got them to fix one cover, but I still have 2 more - Ka-Clunk, Ka-Clunk over and over.

It started when they resurfaced the road last year, and now all the manhole covers are much lower than the street level. It makes me crazy. The 311 street people keep referring the issue to DEP, because they handle the sewers. It's hard to get them to do anything, and no way to follow-up with DEP. I really feel these folks pain, but sometimes they do get fixed. I'm hoping.
