About that new bench with blood on it

EV Grieve reader Peter sends along a note about the new bench adjacent to the MTA ticket machines on Second Avenue just south of 14th Street.

"That bench is currently covered in blood. 311 is no help. MTA reps (about 6 of them) just shrugged it off twice in two days. Don't know who to call for this one. Any ideas?"

And here are two photos...

Peter says that the blood has been there for five days. He has talked with the MTA officials who congregate there to issue tickets to fare beaters. They say that it's not their bench, so it's not their problem. It's a city bench, apparently.

Anyway, we took a look for ourselves...

Blood? Or maybe a melted dessert from Milk Bar around the corner?

  1. Why doesn't Peter just bring a couple paper towels next time and clean it up himself?

  2. I don't think it's Peter's job to clean up other people's BLOOD. That is just disgusting.

Also - don't be so lazy and just stand to wait for the bus.

  3. Whoever decides to clean the chair would be doing a service for everyone--including brittle old ladies who really should be sitting down to wait for the bus.

Doing this kind of work is looked down upon, but people who are willing to make the effort have really big hearts. I wish there were more of them here in NYC.

  4. Aren't there any grownups in the neighborhood anymore? Just bring a couple of paper towels and some bleach cleaner and clean the damned bench ... cheese and bread... and this is supposed to be the better Lower East Side???

  5. Just act like a grownup, bring some paper towels and bleach cleaner or some peroxide and clean the damned bench, for heaven's sake... help the neighborhood and yourself ... cheese and bread, what a bunch of wimps!

  6. Christ... I can't believe this is even an issue. How many more times the effort has been spent photographing/posting/writing about/wondering about/asking about /commenting about this than it would have taken to clean it up with a paper towel and some Windex from one of the concerned locals?

  7. All of a sudden I have a craving for a cheese sandwich.

  8. By the way, nice looking bench. I hope we get more of these. Very fancy. Blood or no blood, benches are great for NYC Streets. Thanks whoever put this in!
