This morning, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe released a "post office study" of nearly 3,700 potential closings in the United States. Despite the massive list, it appears that the Tompkins Square branch on East Third Street between Avenue B and Avenue C has been spared. Its name was not among those that the USPS may shutter to ease the agency's humongous deficit. (The full list is here.) There had been some neighborhood gossip that this small branch may go.
Meanwhile, the other local branches on 14th Street and Fourth Avenue are also not on the closure list.
Wonder what the NYPD Evidence collection team was doing in Andersen Cooper's BF's bar Bedlam just a few moments ago? looking for lost mail? Seriously, what happened?
ReplyDeleteThis 3rd St. PO is one of the best-kept secrets. The lines at the one on 14th are always sooo long; this little one is usually lightly trafficked.
ReplyDeleteOf course, now that EV Grieve has posted it, the millions of readers are going to swarm upon it and make me wait.
It would serve them right if they closed the one on 14th Bet 1st & A. They are so freakin' slow. Two people ahead of you can take 45minutes to get out. And God forbid you gave to pick up a package. Its like they just dump everthing in one pile with no organization whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteThe 14th Street Post Office is by far the worst place in the whole neighborhood. Even worse than "Billy Hurricane's" and that's really bad!!! Seriously it's a shitshow there. The Postal Workers are rude, lazy and not helpful. The actual people that carry the mail are possibly the worst workers that I've ever seen, my neighbors and I continually get the mail from the wrong buildings and they do nothing to fix the problem after calling the supervisors. The carriers also are too lazy to use their keys and hit people's buzzers. Absolutely awful, not a libertarian in anyway, but the Postal Service should be privatized and rid the federal govt of this albatross. They have a monopoly and still lose money. I wish they would get closed down.
ReplyDeleteDangit! I thought this little Post Office was closed over a year ago (some sign indicated so), which is why I resorted to going to the horrid 14th Street station. Noooo... :*-(
ReplyDelete@Anon 2:23 AM - Overall, the United States Postal Service does a fine job. Its largest clients are probably the private couriers like FedEx which use the USPS for parts of their operations. Although the USPS is a government monopoly, it loses money because its own operations are ultimately controlled by Congress which approves things like whether the USPS can raise the price of stamps, stop delivering mail on Saturdays, etc.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous 2:23am: AGREED! The 14th PO and its mail carriers are horrid. My mail often ends up at my neighbor's building, I rarely get package notices until the 30-day holding period is almost up -- getting the dreaded "final notice" which is actually the FIRST.
ReplyDeleteGrrrrrrrrr. It's no accident those clerks sit behind bullet-proof glass.
I go to the station at 11th Street and Fourth Avenue -- they are personable, efficient and friendly. I wish my mail went through their office.
