[Updated] 17 year old shot and killed on East 12th Street early this morning

There have been multiple reports of a fatal shooting last night on 12th Street and Avenue C. According to the Daily News this afternoon, someone shot 17-year-old Keith Salgado (pictured, right) about 1:50 a.m., police said. He later died from his wounds at Bellevue Hospital.

"His life was taken too soon," Salgado's cousin, Jahaira Rivera, told the Daily News. "We were hanging out last night and he decided to split for five minutes. In five minutes, he got shot."

The Lo-Down reported that Salgado's mother was the leader of an anti-violence youth group.

  1. When are we going to have beefed-up police presence around the projects -- there is a precinct dedicated solely to managing them, after all -- with cops walking the beat? With a police force of nearly 50,000, the NYPD can't handle the corner of 12th and C?

  2. This is just awful. This poor kid. My sympathies to his family and friends. He left this world way too young.

  3. This is so strange. I noticed gangs gathered at the east river last night around 10 pm. It definitely seemed like some kind of meeting.

  4. It starts at home. You've got to take care of your business. Parents need to be more involved. It is hard for a lot of the moms in the projects because they are doing the parenting on their own and when you work full time it is hard to monitor your kid.

  5. what a horrible story. the projects suck around there. they ruined my life while living there with their drug infestation in the lower east side and east village and unfortunately manhattan is surrounded by projects. somebody get rid of guns from everybody.

  6. the cops are too busy making money for bloomberg to actually protect anyone who needs it. in fact in most cases in NYC 2011 they are more of a threat than anything else.

  7. I live on Avenue D in the projects. I see too many teenagers out and about late at night. I know some will disagree but I think the Mayor should instill a curfew especially in the projects.

  8. In response to Glamma; This is the first homicide of the year in the 9th Precinct. During the early 1980's to to mid 1990's the 9th precinct averaged around 40 homicides a year. The cop's might have protected you without you even realizing it.

  9. I was looking into what alternatives this young man might have had, thinking about the youth program office on Ave B next to the former krishnas. Turns out, the Andrew Glover project is only to prevent incarceration, no way to intervene before incarceration is even something to avoid.

Where's the youth program that would have saved this life? Do we - the EV - have any other youth programs that might have prevented this? Anyone?

  10. If there is anything we've learned from the past few weeks, isn't it that the mainstream media doesn't feel obligated to report the truth? Why do all of you assume this young man was in a gang just because the media reports it was gang-related? Would you make the same assumptions if he were white?
