What do we think of the renovated Met Foods so far?

Renovations continue over at Met Foods on Second Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street... One reader remarked that it was "nice to have it looking clean."

It certainly is cleaner... and it looks bigger. I'm not a regular here, so I don't have much to say on the matter... New deli is in the works...

Curious what will happen with the floor...

As Jeremiah has written about, a Ratner's was located here for more than 50 years ... (Read Jeremiah's post here.) The R remains, but for how long? Hate to see another sliver of history disappear...

And so far, that exposed piece of Ratner's old wall is still there.

  1. I'll miss the old store feel but let's face it -- it does feel cleaner and anything they have to do stay in business, I'll support them. The owners & employees all seem to be very proud of the new store and I'm just glad they're still here.

  2. As a customer I like the revised space and I would imagine the employees much prefer this working environment. The deli will be a good addition, though I will probably still get my ham from the polish meat market! I wish they would compete with Whole Foods on prices for some essentials, like olive oil.

  4. I love it. Aisles are bigger, brighter and cleaner. Everything looks better in there. I hope they do well.

  5. i couldn't go in there. it felt like the Grocery Store of the Damned. it's much better now.

is the beautiful mosaic tile to the left of the entrance also a relic from Ratner's?

  6. @Anonymous 1:02 - Key Food on Ave A *sells* dead cattle. It's in the beef section.

  7. I stopped shopping here long ago because of the over-active security. The security guard would follow me from aisle to aisle and watch my every move down the aisle. The cashier would watch me constantly in the mirror if I took something out of the freezer to read the ingredients. This was in the early 2000s.

I've never had this experience in any other store anywhere in my life. I would not support a business that treats me in this manner.

  8. Anon 12:41, I always had that experience shopping there. The manager would stand at one end of the aisle and eyeball everyone (me?) who even dared to open a refrigerator or pick something up to peruse. Needless to say never bothered going back.

  9. True about the security. It's creepy and insulting. Is it still the same now after the makeover?

  10. Did I miss a discussion about the sign? It's covered in tarp but from the shapes below, it looks like the first word in the name is something longer than 'Met'.

Name change or just a new font? Anyone know?
