PETER STUYVESANT P.O. WORSE EVER! (East Village)
Date: 2011-12-24, 7:14AM EST
Peter Stuyvesant Post Office has done it again, lost another one of my packages — and they seem not to care in the least. They scanned it delivered last Monday, December 5th and I WAS NOT EVEN HOME. Who did they give it to? They don't know and they don't care. It is appalling that the residents of the East Village must be held hostage by this shoddy Post Office. It has the monopoly and realizes there is nothing we can do about it. I spoke to a temporary Postal Carrier about my lost package, trying to get information, and her response was, "I am just here temporarily. At least I hope so. This is the worst Post Office ever and I am trying desperately to get reassigned." Even their own workers know it sucks. WORST POST OFFICE EVER.
Does anyone like this post office branch on East 14th Street near Avenue A?
I'm so sorry to hear that story. I think the post office on East Broadway has got to be worse though. They service my area of the LES. They lost about three of my packages in a few months so I avoid them at all costs and only have my packages sent to my office address.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about worst, but my vote for best goes to the PO on 43rd St. My rent went missing and they went out of their way to help get it back.
ReplyDeleteeveryone that works at Stuyvesant PO is completely useless.
ReplyDeleteSome of the long time workers who my husband has known for years are very helpful. But there are also employees like the woman who refused to cash a postal money order made out to me as "Jenny" when my I.D. said "Jennifer" because apparently the concept of nicknames was just to complicated for her, no matter how many times or who explained it.
ReplyDeletethis post office is the worst. they pretend that they attempted delivery of parcels when they haven't, then they act sooooo put out when you go to claim it. the service is horrific and the staffs attitude is horrible. absolutely the worst.
ReplyDeleteTwo or three years ago, I complained to a supervisor there about the fact that there were ALWAYS endless lines in that PO, and she appeared to be pretty not interested. One of the other employees there WAS interested and he begged me to contact Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney's office about it (Congress oversees the PO and the P Stuy PO is in her district), because that would be more effective than complaining to higher ups at the PO. I did call her office and they said they'd gotten a number of complaints already about the P Stuy PO.

Funny, I use both this + East Broadway - to East Broadway is a delight compared to Peter Stuy. Seriously THE WORST! 2nd Worst = Doyers.
ReplyDeleteugh they have done this to me! they scan something as delivered and when I come in to let them know that I never received the package all they can say is "but it says it has been delivered" useless
ReplyDeleteHate to break your hearts. They have actually gotten better compared to when I was younger. My last few encounters I had to wait a bit bug the surliness factor seemed to have gone down 20%. Must be you newbies to the LES.
ReplyDeleteIf you want surly, shitty attitudes that can compete with the PO try to 14th Street Y on 1st Avenue.
The 14th Street PO is a fucking madhouse with bullet proof glass yet! WHEN has anyone EVER stuck up a fucking post office???
ReplyDeleteThe lines there are endless, the service sucks and the workers there obviously HATE their jobs!!
I prefer the PO at 11th Street + Fourth Avenue. Their windows are wide open, their lines move swiftly, and the clerks are friendly, helpful and on the ball.
WHY is one PO location so different from another? Could it be about demographics????
I've had some truly horrible experiences at that post office, not even taking into account having to wait over an hour to pick up a package while watching workers in there chatting and doing nothing to help clear out the lines.
ReplyDeleteI did have a great Fedex issue resolved this week. They said they delivered a box, but we never got it. After a couple of days they had the delivery guy track it down and he found it in another building's lobby, and brought it all the way up the stairs. Very nicely done.
Having used all three EV P.O.s in my various apartments, I find that although Stuy is terrible, the other two aren't so bad. Cooper Station is fucking incredible - the package pickup guy there is the best. And Tompkins isn't quite as nice but more than makes up for it in how cozy and out of the way it is.
ReplyDeleteFortunately my apt is served by the Cooper station. Quite happy with the service there as well.
ReplyDeletesit down for this one!
ReplyDeletethe cooper square post office manager was so helpful to me that i had to write a letter to the world thanking him.
and while it was over a year ago, it was one fantastic experience.
i put a check in the mail box on second avenue BY MISTAKE.
the manager of cooper square post office checked two mail boxes on second avenue (just in case), looking for the check. they must have picked up the mail because the check was not there. he suggested i go the the post office "bridge" on 11th street after 5pm, where three post people sorted through the mail looking for my check. not there.
the next day the check was delivered to my mailbox (the address that was on the check).
i will never get mad at a cooper square post office employee again, even though my mail is often delivered to other buildings.
i had a package kept at the stuy po and didn't get notification about it until 2 weeks later, wtih 2-3 days left to pick it up until it was returned to the sender. they also gave me the slip for my neighbor's package, which i never gave to her.. guess she never got the package.
ReplyDeleteYes, this PO really is the worst. However, "OWR" is right. It used to be a LOT worse in the old days. (I know; hard to imagine, but it's true)
ReplyDeletei stick to Tompkins Square, and Coopers (when necessary)
This is my PO as well, and it can be pretty terrible. But if I had to guess, the Craiglist person probably had his package stolen by another tenant. The PO probably did "deliver" it -- but just left it in the building lobby or in front of this person's door.
ReplyDeleteThis is technically allowed by the USPS; the package *sender* has to require a signature or that the recipient be home, otherwise the USPS is allowed to leave it. But of course it is completely ridiculous to just leave packages out in the open in unsecure, non-doorman buildings (i.e., almost the entire EV) and call them "delivered."
I learned this the hard way myself after an expensive purchase went missing and Stuy couldn't/wouldn't help at all; I broke down and got a PO Box. I still have to wait on monster lines to get my packages at Stuyvesant, but at least they don't "deliver" them when I'm not home now.
I agree that the Peter Stuyvesant PO is the worst. I moved in October and they have been able to forward only ONE piece of mail since--and that was after I called the national PO hotline to complain about not getting forwarded mail. I need to call and complain again.
ReplyDeleteIf any post office deserves to be closed, it's the Peter Stuyvesant PO.
If you can, go to the Cooper Square PO, which is much more efficient.
Yup, IME, Stuyvesant PO is the worst. And, based on talking to the carriers, it's getting worse because of budget cuts, competent workers bailing, and generally awful management.
ReplyDeleteI like USPS, I generally support USPS, even if it's not perfectly efficient, but the Stuy PO gives me hives. I try to avoid it and I have my packages sent elsewhere but every now and then I have to try to deal with them. If budget cuts end up causing numerous PO closures, I'm okay with liquidating Stuy and walking to, say, Cooper.
Last year, I ordered a Christmas gift, and it never came. Then three weeks later I got a note informing me there was a package at the post office. It was this Christmas gift, and I knew they had gotten it three weeks before because the delivery confirmation slip confirmed it! Meanwhile, in the last year I have gotten at least three packages that have sat at the post office for weeks before the mailman bothered to leave a slip informing me of their delivery in my mailbox. The guy who is on the truck told me if you think you have a package coming, and you are a customer of the StyTown post office just go there when you think it should have arrived and pretend you got a slip but lost it so they will look. According to this employee, if they don't feel like attempting to deliver packages, they don't. Nice to know!
ReplyDeleteYes, the counter clerks suck, but the carriers who service Stuy Town are great. Minimal problems despite the incredible turnover of residents which make it impossible for the carriers to learn their customers names. I remember when we had TWICE a day deliveries of mail, so I've got a fair amount of time to compare. One problem is that around the end of the year, they have a lot of temporary employees, so service gets worse.
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for 11th St. Cooper Square (they are awesome, almost every single one there is exceptional , e.g. doing their job :) compared to 14th St. Stuyvesant - but only since that jack booted long hair thug retired - he was worse than anyone at Stuyvesant. I think the 10009 PO on e3rd St. btw B & C is kind of cute - is it still open?
ReplyDeleteTHIS Post Office is the WORST EVER IN THE WORLD!!!!! Please let's get campaign to either to get some kind of action going there to rid it of it's terrible service and attitude. I plan on calling Congresswoman Maloney's office, I hope that many of you do too!! My mail is delivered to the building next door an average of 2 times a week! When confronting a postal worker, they claim that they're a "replacement" and not their normal route... Went ballistic after they lazily and repeatedly buzzed my buzzer to gain access to my building because they were too lazy to look for their key. Waking me after working latenight repeatedly. Made me feel like I was the bad guy. Called supervisor and nothing happened TRUE STORY!!! I'm a working person and I try to be on the right side of things politically and vote for working people and unions but this is much like the viral video of the FEDEX worker last week, of what's wrong with our society today, nobody cares about doing a good job anymore and then passes the buck when called on it. This Post Office's horrible service needs people around here to take a stand. They flat out suck in all departments! Let's go people!
ReplyDeleteI just moved away from 6th and D, where I'd lived for 4 1/2 years. Dear god, that Post Office couldn't have been worse if they tried. They also have completely useless hours for anyone who works during the day (M-F, 9-5). I work M-F, 9-7. Gee, thanks. Who are they supposed to be servicing? I just had my packages sent to my workplace, because I didn't want to risk having to skip work to visit that Kafkaesque cesspit of a government building.
ReplyDeleteAxis of Eville? heh. that's a good one.
ReplyDeleteplus sty post office is actually always stinky smelling inside. kinda like an actual pig sty.
to single out one facility is wasting our time.
ReplyDeletemany post offices are in rough shape and the usual method of fixing the issue is no longer being taken into any further consideration.
i'm surprised when people say "delivered" and it's in their possession and that they signed for it themselves!
many notices i get (or hear about) claim delivery but they don't have it NOR did they sign for it, yet the carrier claims (and the notices claim also) that the item in question was signed for. (by who?!)
yesterday, standing in line.. everyone before me had one complaint! --- lost package, no delivery but marked as such and also signed for but not by the recipient.
what gives?! what is going on, this is bad news! (nationally, at least.)
i've had the same institutional flaw.. marked as delivered and signed for.. but, i had neither. who signed for me? where's my package. all too redundant of a situation with no solution in sight.
