Back in June, the Exquisite DVD Video store next door to IHOP on East 14th Street hit the market...
Several tipsters have relayed, um, tips on what is coming next to this space... something that will fit in nicely alongside the IHOP, KFC, Subway, Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins on this block between Second Avenue and Third Avenue...
Yes — a 7-Eleven ... there's not much info on the DOB site, but at least one document dated last Monday shows paperwork approving 7-Eleven signage ...
It's official, 7-Eleven's are the new bedbugs.
ReplyDeleteAt least the B&T crowd will feel perfectly at home on 14th.
ReplyDeleteoh jeez. that's depressing. well you won't catch me dead in there (or alive)
ReplyDeleteStarbucks, Subway, TGI Friday's, IHOP, 7-11 appearing all over while independent stores and eateries are closing on a seemingly daily basis. I'm not even a longtimer here (ten years) but this is all hitting me like some never-ending April Fool's prank.
ReplyDeleteit is a combination of things i think, the economy and rents already being too high. now these big companies are the only entities that can afford the rent.
ReplyDeleteIts more a function of landlord purposely seeking these tenants, often in tandem with big banks who provide loans - property owners love to constantly take out loans on their equity so they can purchase whores and other status symbols. the loans are based on predictable revenue.
ReplyDeletethe horror, the horror
ReplyDeleteUGh. The one on Bowery keeps taking me by surprise and depressing me. ON the plus side, it's empty every time I walk by!
ReplyDeleteBlame the landlords. They decide who gets to open up shop.
ReplyDeleteVote with your wallet. Don't shop there.
Chipotle's and IHOP aren't big surprises, 14th St is still discount-ville. 7-Eleven does surprise but probably shouldn't. It probably won't get many discount shoppers, but they're probably counting on the huge New School/NYU student presence there.
ReplyDeleteThey've also just gotten the permit to renovate and move into 813 Broadway. (though they were stopped from putting up a big lighted sign, so far). 3 blocks from 14th st.. So they've got the New School/NYU students and tourists mid-village and Union Square covered too. (and this landlord has been illegally renting out the rest of the building for years, so I guess it figures)
