It's the one of the Deli 3.0s with paninis and wraps and smoothies and stuff.
And look — bagels!
Previously on EV Grieve:
Ave. A Mini Market abruptly closes
On second thought, Avenue A Mini Market not reopening
Avenue A Mini Market now without part of its front window
It's a punk move to post 'Bagels' on your signage when there's a bagel shop on the next block. This type of thing would never happen in the NYC I grew up in. As far as a ' bagel war' all I can say is I compete with real bagel shops dolled up min marts.

ReplyDeleteTompkins Square Bagels rule.
ReplyDeleteTo Tompkins Deli owners:
ReplyDeleteWhere I grew up, there was an unspoken rule among shop owners to not cut into each others biz. A mutual respect if you will. You lost that today. Now, I'm going start offering all sorts of things that I never planned to. Things you do. And I'm going to do it cheaper and better. I'm smarter than you are and I'm going to win. IT'S ON.
@Bagelguy. Don't give these folks a second thought. I'm sure what they're calling "bagels" will probably be mere rolls with holes. No one looking for a real bagel is going to go there or a smoothie or a burger, most likely.
ReplyDeleteEvery deli in NY sells bagels, including the deli that recently closed in that spot. I'm don't see this as a threat to a bagel store unless they plan on artisinaling it up and charging $2.50 for a bagel with cream cheese, which they won't. Don't worry, your bagel monopoly is safe.
