[Ken Mac]
Hey! Let's just keep the bad news coming!
Spotted this at Jeremiah's Vanishing New York first... Our friend Ken Mac at Greenwich Village Daily Photo has the scoop that venerable Bleecker Bob's Records is closing and will become a — Subway? Dunkin' Donuts??? No — Starbucks!
The manager of Cafe Reggio confirmed the atrocity to Ken, noting: "Starbucks will take 30% of our business. All the NYU kids want their mocha frappuccino."
UPDATED Jan. 30, 7:05 p.m.
Starbucks says that they are not taking over the space.
So is this the point that New York City finally loses everything that made it, in fact, New York City, and becomes just another fucking mall?
ReplyDelete"All the NYU kids want their mocha frappuccino."
ReplyDeleteOf course they do. This is horrible news and now I see more above it. What a depressing day.
oh my god, STOP FREAKIN FREQUENTING STUPID PLACES EVERYONE!
ReplyDeleteWhile the NYU student reference is generally true, I must protest to say we're not all like that! I completed my graduate degree at NYU and moved to Greenwich Village for its charm, history, local restaurants and stores. It's sad to see places like Bleecker Bobs go out of business... but it will just mean we will need to give more support to our locals like Cafe Reggio, Third Rail, and Porto Rico!
ReplyDeletewhen are they closing? omg!!
ReplyDeletewow
ReplyDeletethey do not know what they do. if occupy is looking for meaning i think corporate regulation might be a good one. restructure of the corporate structure. i think manhattan is done already, but this is ridiculous. the nothing keeps sucking everything up.
ReplyDeleteIt's apt that it's raining today for my heart is weeping.
ReplyDeleteVery depressing news.
ReplyDelete@Karaugh - Porto Rico in the Village closed a while back.
That was/is my favorite most obnoxious record store! Wow. F*ck mallhattan.
ReplyDeleteAnything is fine with me if it keeps the little snots out of my beloved Reggio. But I hate it that Bleecker Bob's has to close.
ReplyDelete@Stedman - The flagship store in the Village on Bleecker Street is open, the Soho branch on Thompson has closed.
ReplyDelete"All the other kids
ReplyDeletewith the pumped-up drinks
better run, better run,
outrun my gun
all the other kids
with the pumped-up drinks..."
oh lord. WTF @ the death toll on EV Grieve this week! JAYsus!!!!
ReplyDeleteThere aren't nearly enough places to get Starbucks' burnt-tasting coffee in NYC.
ReplyDeleteCafe Reggio needs to get its balls back. It hasn't made a granita di cafe in years. I am so disappointed. I'd rather go to Dunkin Donuts than Reggio if they want to rest on past laurels.
ReplyDeleteBeing a 54 year resident of this city, seeing another Starbucks saddens me. It saddens me to know that there are enough mindless dweebs to make Starbucks the force that it is. But what can you do? Give the masses what they want and deserve. So so coffee at an outrageous price. Just tell them that it's worth it, they'll believe you.
