'RESPECT this gesture'
Spotted on East Seventh Street. I keep reading this and don't think I totally get it either. I should have taken a photo of the look too.

Why is it that, unlike every other front door in the world, the front door on virtually all NYC apartment buildings opens out, not in?
ReplyDeleteIt's bad design, when opening a door requires TWO hands.
ReplyDeleteThat said, the management is justified in asking tenants to respect the bad design.
I don't fucking understand this sign.
ReplyDeleteHigh occupancy apartment building+fire = people being crushed against a door trying to open it inward.
ReplyDeletei like how they use BOLD and UNDERLINE and EXCLAMATION MARKS and RED FONT to make an ostensibly very important but vague and confusing statement
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm high after reading this.
ReplyDeletesimple:
ReplyDeletepeople turn their key in the lock. then pull at the door with the key turned in the lock. thus pulling the cylinder. rather than using their other hand to pull the door handle. the cylinder is then getting worn and torn.
Well, presumably it means people are putting the key in the lock, turning it, and pulling the door open by pulling the key instead of using the handle.
ReplyDeleteNot sure why one would do this, which risks breaking or bending the key, but perhaps the tenants all carry those little bonsai dogs in the other hand?

makes me want to jump around and smash things
ReplyDeleteThis was all easier when I didn't have a front door.
ReplyDeleteI love the phrase: "Please respect this gesture"
ReplyDeleteWait, your doors really all open out? In every apartment building I've ever lived in in NYC, the doors open in... I thought that was how it was supposed to be!
