Hot and Crusty workers asking for respect on 14th Street and First Avenue

EV Grieve reader Steven notes picketers outside the Hot & Crusty on 14th Street and First Avenue this afternoon...

The flyers that the picketers are distributing outline the allegations... including "We have been verbally abused by management because of our physical appearances. In some instances, we were called IDIOTS and a worker was called FAT IDIOT."

  1. It seems the struggle against Hot & Crusty goes beyond this one location. I found this link this morning: http://hands-on-organizing.blogspot.com/2012/05/hot-and-crusty-workers-image-from.html

  2. Setting aside the workers' grievances for a sec -- is this location actually a Hot & Crusty anymore? I pass it approximately a bazillion times a week but only noticed a couple days ago that it actually no longer has any signage that says "Hot & Crusty." Anyone know what's the deal?

  3. David's Bagels treated their employees with respect.

This open letter to by Stuy Town and Friends needs to be read again.

See greedy landlords, this is what you get when you push out mom and pop shops in place of corporate chain stores such as this one.

Unfortunate reality however is that the NYU kids and the new transplants/ients will continue patronizing Hot & Crusty. They don't even know or care what existed there before and the values and contributions that David's Bagels gave to the neighborhood and community.

East Village and NYC are becoming like Fritz Lang's Metropolis, if not already.

  5. David Bagel's was next door to Hot & Crusty's but it's the same landlord.

The landlord decided to kick out David's Bagels because they didn't want Hot & Crusty's to have competition.

I've boycotted Hot & Crusty's since they opened.
