Why you'll see Catherine Deneuve dressed like a donkey tonight in Tompkins Square Park

The second and last of the Films on the Green Festival er, films in Tompkins Square Part happens tonight with a free screening of "Donkey Skin," or as I prefer [in French accent] "Peau d'Âne."

And let's just cut-n-paste this from Wikipedia ...

Peau d'Âne (English: Donkey Skin) is a 1970 French musical film directed by Jacques Demy. It is also known by the English titles Once Upon a Time and The Magic Donkey. The film was adapted by Demy from Donkeyskin, a fairy tale by Charles Perrault about a king who wishes to marry his daughter. It stars Catherine Deneuve and Jean Marais, with music by Michel Legrand.

And please, save all your Woos for Catherine Deneuve until the end of the film.

Here's a snippet of the action...

Oh. Could I buy some pot from you?

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the City of New York Parks & Recreation sponsor the Films on the Green series. The movie starts at 8:30 p.m. ... and is in French with English subtitles ...

And maybe buy some $1 popcorn at Ray's beforehand...

  2. Not that anyone cares, but it is because of this exquisite film that I will never set foot in Film Forum again. I attended a screening there a number of years ago, on Christmas or New Year's Day, I believe. The hipper-than-thou audience, admittedly rather sparse, laughed raucously and with devastating knowingness (they thought) every time a character opened his or her mouth to sing, which of course was all the time because the film is a musical. Sung through. Imagine that, hiptard rubes! ... who of course also yacked away during the film as if it were in a foreign language (to them) and they had no need to listen to the actors. Oh, right.

Jacques Demy was a genius as well as the longtime husband of Agnes Varda, a fact which should have moved those idiot scoffers to silence, at least on occasion, that frigid afternoon. In Varda's honor.

Alas, that was not the first audience of supercilious boobs to ruin a film for me at Film Form over the years. Don't get me going on Sorry, Wrong Number ...
