Multiple readers have pointed us to the Subway on Second Avenue near East Ninth Street, where workers removed the sign and gutted the sandwich shop today. This makes the second Subway to close in the East Village this past month. The Subway on First Avenue near East 13th Street shut down in October.

ReplyDeleteToday, I actually saw someone other than a worker in the Subweigh on 1st Ave between 6th and 7th. My heart sank at the thought that it might have been a customer, but it was only the postman delivering the mail.

ReplyDeleteWould love to restore the corner of 6th and 1st ave to local businesses! Subway, dunkin donuts and McDonald's signage completely ruin that corner... Now that I'm moving there, unfortunately, people say, oh you're moving by the McDonald's, or, when I give visitors directions, I have nearly no choice but to say, you'll see a dunkin donuts on the corner...also, how is it that tho brands always negotiate in extra building signage - from hideous flags to 3d coffee cups... I know we can't keep them out, but damn, we should at least be able to keep their shit off the facades of our buildings, especially now that we have a historic designation.

ReplyDeleteSubway is disgusting. But I confess to a partiality for Nathan's fries at the new location by 4th Street. The hot dogs are not the same, though: they're fatter and they don't taste as good. But the fries are still fine.

ReplyDeleteI'm a little late weighing in on this one, but I just went to that Nathan's last evening. Aside from the fact that I was the only customer in there (7 p.m.-ish) and that my hot dog and fries took nearly five minutes to reach me, the hot dog was decidedly less than the best, and for $3.25 plus tax! The fries were good, but the portion a little skimpy. Got a free counter-guy hat, though.
