However, for whatever reasons, those plans never materialized and the group did not appear at the meeting.
Meanwhile, yesterday, CB3 released the SLA committee docket for December, which includes this item:
Pride and Joy (Pride and Joy BBQ LLC), 24 1st Ave (op)
Turns out that this will be the first NYC outpost for renowed BBQ chef Myron Mixon, who, among other things, serves as a judge on
A Pride & Joy opened earlier this month in North Miami. Per Eater Miami:
Mixon will be using his custom-made smokers and his own line of sauces and spices to serve up some the darn best ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and wings you've ever had.
I asked Lucky Cheng's owner Hayne Suthon (who also resides in the building here on First Avenue) about her new tenant.
"I am beyond excited to have this group comprised of a stellar team covering all bases of food, design construction and operations," she said in an email. "I have found them to be nothing short of super down to earth, sharp, creative and talented."
In addition to the restaurant, the Pride & Joy team apparently has some ideas for other uses of the space.
"As a resident of 1st Avenue and 2nd St since 1986, observing the good and bad trends over the past 26 years, they have been very receptive to my ideas as to what is needed in the neighborhood," Suthon said. "Aside from all of that, I CANNOT wait for them to open; I'm obsessed with good barbecue. I've already had a dream about dining there."

I love good barbecue, but the aroma might be overwhelming for the people who live right there. Hopefully they'll put in a serious ventilation system.
ReplyDeleteA decent barbecue place in the neighborhood sounds like a good idea. A chain celebrity-chef tourist mecca does not...
ReplyDeleteShe's excited now, but just imagine what Hayne's apartment is going to smell like once this place gets cookin'. In the beginning it will be new and fresh, but after a few months, it will be daily naseau inducing. and opening a window will only make it worse. unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for her like I feel bad for the condo owners at 199 Bowery who spoke in favor of a ground floor club at the CB meeting, but are already complaining about it - it hasn't even opened yet.
I'm sad for both of these opportunists.
The city's best bbq is at Georgia's on Orchard a mere few blocks away. And a serious competitor, Mighty Quinn's is opening in the old Vandaag space. Enough with the oversaturation. Why not a low-rent sushi joint or a TD Bank or a Duane Reade?!
ReplyDeleteMmmm... Pork...
ReplyDeleteAnother business where it will mostly cater to the tourists, out-of-towners, bridge-and-tunnelers, transients. As a commenter previously said on the Stogo closing, these type of businesses don't make a community, they make an entertainment district.
ReplyDeletei mean, its replacing lucky chengs...that brought hammered bachelorette parties from scarsdale...no complaints here.
ReplyDeleteLucky Cheng's of back then was never intended JUST for the bridge and tunnelers, word of mouth made it a place for the screaming bachelorettes. At least Lucky Cheng's had the decency to move to Times Square. Now, this Pride and Joy will be the pride and joy for the screaming transients, not just Bachelorettes. Next thing you know, Guy Fieri will be opening up a restaurant in the EV. Woooooooooooo!
ReplyDelete@Anon 12:58 PM, Georgia's isn't barbecue. It's baked ribs covered in barbecue sauce. I like their fried chicken though.
ReplyDeleteGeorgia's is correctly described as baked with spices not BBQ that is smoked low and slow. I was fooled the first time ordered from there.
ReplyDeleteSadly, Pride & Joy is an epic failure. Overpriced food of dubious preparation and rude management sensitive to criticism (Because it's deserved and unheeded). For the price, go somewhere with good food.
