Last night, EVG reader c ryan noticed police officers standing by two candles on the southeast corner of 11th Street and Avenue B...
Today, there was an explanation for the memorial...
On Jan. 27, 1972, rookie officers Gregory Foster and Rocco Laurie were gunned down here while on foot patrol. Their deaths were later reportedly tied to the Black Liberation Army.
You can read more about the officers at the Lower East Side History Project site.
Weird that whomever wrote the flier felt the need to mention the assailants' skin color? Or even the BLA bit? This reads like "These brave officers died in the Great War Against the Blahs of 1972" and not "Two officers were killed by some insane young cult members here back when the neighborhood was kind of a mess"
ReplyDeleteIts nice to see the remembrance....good on you NYPD. That said, in my 10 years of living on the block of 10th b/w b and c I have never once seen a police officer walking the beat. Closest we get is them zooming by in their cars headed elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of hard to extricatethe "black" part from the "Black Liberation Army". And personally, I care more about the dead cops than the scumbags who killed them.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all to the jackass who thinks that these two BRAVE police officers were killed by the blahs of 1972'. No that is wrong.
ReplyDeletePatrolmen Laurie and Foster were assassinated b y trained members of the Black Liberation Army while walking the beat on Avenue B and East 11th Street
The BLA that was composed largely of former Black Panthers. The goal of the organizations program was 1 of armed struggle and its stated goal was to take up arms for the liberation and self determination of black people. It was it was not a cult
thank you for that wildly unimportant addition to the discourse.
ReplyDeleteDon't you think people should know the truth about what happened that night?
