Skyrocketing rents, cramped apartments and a cut-throat rental market. Conditions that originally forced New Yorkers out of Manhattan are now sending them back, a report claims.
A real-estate expert said Williamsburg and DUMBO homes have become so hot that people are being priced out — and Manhattan has become a cheaper alternative.

Oh noooooo....please stay in Williamsburg!
ReplyDeleteYeah? Tell that to an employed friend of mine who has been searching for a normal, nothing fancy Manhattan apt. for almost a year and who keeps getting shut out of space after space, thanks to the current .07% vacancy rate for rentals and the hordes of people clamoring to get into them.
ReplyDeleteScary things have blown up in brooklyn real estate wise in such a seemingly short span of time. And Gojira, there's a difference between the phrase "cheaper alternative" and "cheap" or "available."
ReplyDeleteThese real estate articles all refer to those people who regularly spend $3K on their rent - "the condo in Williamsburg was $4,500, and I could live in Battery for $3,500" kinds ahite. For those of us who don't even make that in a month and are forced to spend ~50% of our disposable income on rent, these stories are not relevant or accurate.
ReplyDeleteYup Manhattan, that charming little up and coming enclave. I hear they have cute restaurants and shops there! Better get in before everyone else catches on!
ReplyDeleteNot surprised. I'd give anything to be out of Manhattan, and into Brooklyn. Manhattan is just a soulless dead ghost town. (See Nick Zedd's comments, and see Death Star)
ReplyDeleteThat is all. Nothing more need said. It's over.
anyone who travels along the L line in Brooklyn can see it's hotter than the LES. Anyone with a brain, that is. The West Village is for the Rich and the UWS is for jews with kids. The UES, well no one lives there and the financial district is for high paid people afraid of living in Manhattan.
ReplyDeleteI tried bk for a year, spent so much time waiting for trains, so much money on taxis when I couldnt wait, monthly mta cards... Moving back to the ev I am paying 100 more in rent, but saving so much more money on all the extras and time... Plus I got so sick of the rich kids playing poor...
ReplyDelete@ 2:10 Anon,
ReplyDeleteDead on. L path is hotter than EV and LES.
I'm hearing that some of the cheapest apts in the city are on the UES. Perfect for woo-hoos.
ReplyDeleteHow come everyone ignores Harlem, Washington Heights, Morningside, etc.? Those are all Manhattan too, they're a lot cheaper, and a LOT less suburbanized. Ok Harlem's starting to go, but still. What I mean is, don't erase uptown when talking about Manhattan. There is plenty of cool stuff still here!:)
ReplyDeleteI guess the article is on to something. The other day I actually heard someone say they were moving back to Manhattan because Brooklyn has become to trendy for them.
ReplyDeleteThe EV/LES may be going through some evolution pains right now but good lord have you been to W-Burb lately? I would MUCH rather live in DT Manhattan than deal w/ the pretentiousness of Northern BK. Young kids, somehow paying absurd rents and dress, and act, like D's.
