Signs for the incoming Yogurt Crazy here on Third Avenue between 12th Street and 11th Street arrived last June.
And we haven't seen much, if any, activity in the space. Apparently the shop has been on the clock. A "rent demand" letter dated Feb. 2 is on the front door... Per the letter, signed by Peter Min, director of NYU's Lease and Acquisitions, Yogurt Crazy owes $37,134.87 "for rent and additional rent" through Feb. 28.
Not only do they have to pay the rent, but also the additional rent? Seems excessive. Next they'll be after the supplementary rent!
ReplyDeleteOf course, God forbid we kept the hardware store that had been there for so many years, who needs crap like that when there's fro-yo to be had?!?
ReplyDeleteI would hope they had a better way to contact a business they rented space to besides leaving a note taped to the door.
ReplyDeleteHa! That's what nyu gets for charging excessive rent (and "additional rent"). Yogurt Crazy probably filed for bankruptcy to get out of nyu's crazy lease and plans to open a Crazy Yogurt around the corner right before the springtime fro-yo craze.
ReplyDeleteNY law requires you post a note on the door or in a "conspicious place" or something like that.
ReplyDeleteAlso - "Additional rent" means lawyer fees, collection agency fees, etc.. They likely signed a lease that says "by signing this lease you agree that costs of collection of rent are deemed as "additional rent". By forcing in that statement into a lease, the greedy landlord tries to suck as much from you as he can. "Additional Rent" is collectable in a judgement. Collection fees are not necessarily collectable.
Yeah the hardware store never missed a rent payment in thirty-five years but the yogurt shop stiffs the landlords for bu-ku bucks. Well, I go to hardware stores that serve ice cream alot more. Now they will open a 7-11 or whatever. Hope they have some hardware. Miss you Mr. Scarvatelli! Hi NYC, miss ya too!
