[Rendering on East 13th Street in the Northwest East Village]
The real estate section of the Times had a piece yesterday on the Jefferson, the incoming condoplex that replaced the Mystery Lot along East Thirteen Street near Third Avenue... in particular, the Times explores the Jefferson's claim that the building is in the "Northwest East Village."
With the new name, the team building the Jefferson may be trying to freshen the image of the area, which is lined with aged brick tenements and has been more gentrification-proof than other East Village enclaves.
Or, like other marketing tactics, the renaming could serve no more serious purpose than to draw attention to the building.
“We were being a little funny, because we know it’s never going to catch on,” said Michael Barry, the president of the Ironstate Development Company in Hoboken, N.J., which is working with SK Development and CB Developers on the project.
Anyway, everybody knows that this is Midtown South.

I know we all have fun mocking the whole "Midtown South" thing, but just to be clear it's more of a term for commercial real estate professionals than anything else. It's just meant to classify the area between traditional Midtown offices and Lower Manhattan for statistic-keeping purposes. And it's been in use for at least the last decade.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what single name you use to refer to the area that encompasses Madison Square Park, Flatiron, Gramercy, Chelsea, East Village, Greenwich Village, West Village, Soho and Tribeca you're bound to ruffle some feathers. So why not Midtown South?
"the area ... has been more gentrification-proof than other East Village enclaves"
ReplyDeleteNot no mo' thanks to the very development they're writing about
So does that mean 14th Street between B and C will become the Southeast East Village?
ReplyDeleteNorthwest East. I like that.
ReplyDeleteI prefer Upper West East Village. It sounds less...well, you know.
ReplyDeleteI heard that area was Murray Hill South, no?
ReplyDeleteWhen do the bodies start floating up to the surface, crashing through the floors?
ReplyDeleteActually that area is known as Northern BroHo, or NoBroHo, which is anything north of Tompkins Square Park (aka (ToSquaPa), south of WooHooVille, formerly known as Stuyvestant Town, and east of Occupy FarmVille (aka OccuFarm), formerly known as Union Square. Hope that clears thing up.
ReplyDelete"It sounds less...well, you know."
ReplyDeletethis made me laugh out loud....
