Something Sweet space for rent on First Avenue

"Space available" signs went up Friday at the former home of Something Sweet on First Avenue at East 11th Street.

The family-owned bakery had been closed since last July. There had been a variety of issues, from problems with the landlord to health-related concerns for a family member.

The owners tired to revive the business back in the spring... and were hopeful that they would be able to reopen with new investors and updated business model.

However, at the very last minute, we understand that the landlord came forward with two other potential tenants, both willing to pay $11,000 a month for the space — out of reach for a new Something Sweet. There was an auction here in late spring...



Given the for rent signs, it's apparent that the space is still up for grabs.

We also heard that the landlord is specifically seeking some type of chain for the space.

And it's a tough time here for longtime family-run bakeries here. The 9th St. Bakery closed for good on June 9.

    And that's an awfully small storefront for a chain.

    That was a great lil' bakery (survived on the runoff from Venerios and De Robertis). They had a great display near the register- a baggie holding Cheerios was labelled "Bagel seeds"!

    Sad to hear they have closed for good. The women who worked at the counter were fun to talk to and were always delighted when I came into the bakery with a friend from Italy.

    I'm kinda hoping for something different, like a Dunkin Donuts with a nail salon in the back, or FroYo place that also does foot massages, or maybe a Citibank branch with a Chinese takeout kitchen, anything to save some time!

    It appears to me that if a business wants to thrive anywhere in Manhattan they need to adapt to the times.

    So sad. They had the best linzer tart cookies and apple turnovers in town. Between losing the 9th Street Bakery and this, I am at a loss to find a bakery when I need a cookie fix. Moishe's, yeah, but not that great. And Birdbath or whatever the hell its name is way too hipster for me, though they do have excellent pain au chocolat...which they insist on calling chocolate croissants.

    De Roberti has some good cookies, especially the pignoli and the chocolate cookies with hazelnuts...
    changing times, folks. Remember,
    juice/wax/fro-yo/repeat.
    Then maybe you can have an $18 martini, but you better get to bikram yoga first.

    Isn't Russo's right adjacent to that space?
    Too bad they couldn't expand into the space, and offer up a little trattoria or osteria-type spot.

    The landlord is not the bad guy in this case and the store isn't adjacent to Russo's and the new tenant has not yet been determined and no chain store is expected as I understand it from a conversation with the landlord this evening.
