The Feast of San Gennaro starts tonight: Do you care?

[EVG file photo]

Or maybe the question is, Will you go?

Anyway! I haven't been since 2009, and that was before anything was open for the day.

Also, Eater has a food preview here. The official Feast site is here.

  1. I miss the Feast of St. Anthony on Sullivan Street. San Gennaro was for the rubes.

  5. This has been a sucker-fest for so long now. Growing up in ConeyIsland I remember that the guys made a big deal about going to The Feast, like we were going to magically pick up a bunch of girls somehow, or who knows what. So a big bunch of us dopes, mostly say 14 years old, would pack into someones older brothers car and make the trip in, and every year it sucked worse than the one before, even then I was like, this so sucks whats up with that? I am talking about say 1969 thru 1975, then I was not with that any more.
PS ok maybe you could blame the not picking up a pack of beautiful girls on us, but how about the lousy overpriced food, the obnoxious bullying attitude of the staff, and the ripoffs everywhere you turned your head.

  6. Forget walking down Mulberry, but the musical events are usually pretty good. Last year, there were some mighty fine singers. It's worth going for that.

  7. I used to feel the same way, but if you can bear the crowds some vendors have stepped up their game in a big way. Torrisi's has a stand now and a few other places make unique dishes just for the feast. Enjoy your jaded pose, folks, more delicious treats for me.

  8. way too much cynicism here. Way too much. this thing is still great for the kiddies and young love birds. sure it's not the real little italy but it's a reasonable facsimile.

  9. I went last year and saw Connie Francis in the parade...the crowds were worth that. But all in all... a little goes a long way. I'm with the others here -- St. Anthony's was much more fun... there are some other fun feasts outlying NY... San Gennaro in Long Beach comes to mind.

  10. The more important question is what does SMDH think?

  11. During San Gennaro if you go to to The Church of the Most Precious Blood after 10:30 and knock three times ask for Niccolo to get in the game. Shhh..

  12. It always reminds me of the opening scene of Mean Streets. Classic New York City.
