Banjara moving soon to the Haveli space on Second Avenue
Word is that Banjara, the reliable Indian restaurant on First Avenue at East Sixth Street, will be moving this week... into the Haveli space on Second Avenue near East Sixth Street...
Haveli has been closed for the past month.
EVG reader @SeanCarlson dined at Banjara the other night ... and picked up a new business card...
One member of the staff explained, "business down, rent up."
An Italian restaurant called Figaro Bistro Grill was looking to take over the Banjara space, as we noted last month. The Figaro principals were on last month's CB3/SLA committee docket, but withdrew their application.

Oh goodie! ANOTHER Bistro Grill! Cos we sure don't have many of THOSE in the neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteYeah, sounds like the interest they took in choosing their name should roughly approximate the interest they take in the food they'll serve.
ReplyDeleteAt least it's still in 6th street in Little India or Curry Row or what's left of it.

Remember when people would line-up and wait for tables and the limos would come from the tri-state area to dine here? http://www.nytimes.com/1997/01/19/nyregion/bad-days-on-sixth-street.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm. Now it's the biscuits, brobars, and brunches.
most of the restaurants now spend more time thinking about their sound system and decor than the food. These little turds need to have an experience when they go out, its not about the food. They need some topic to be able to twit or chat or text about on some e-network, to the thumping bass
ReplyDeleteMaybe they'll finally fix the window at Haveli? What's up with that?
ReplyDeleteWHOA. DIdn't I just order from Haveli less than a week or two ago?? I have some great memories from dining-in at Haveli. It was my default Indian, but they had gotten ridiculously expensive. I never realized Banjara was the same folks. We'll see.
ReplyDeleteThat's nice, I used to like Banjara...better than the other curry-mills.
ReplyDeleteAnd, yes, preserve us from another "bistro".
Evilsugar25, you probably did order from Haveli recently...but I'm guessing the food came from Banjara. I ordered from Haveli a couple of weeks ago, and it was the same delicious stuff--however, there was a Banjara menu in the bag. Banjara and Haveli--who knew?
ReplyDeleteI hope they keep Haveli's shattered glass storefront and their great menu, they just need to work on the pricing and the promotions to get more people in there. They should also offer more of the spicy dishes like Southern Indian cuisine, or the street and snack foods from Mumbai, Delhi and Banagalore,
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the only Indian restaurants around with outdoor seating in the summer, and is much more open and less claustrophobic than all the others on 6th Street with very high ceilings if you sit downstairs.
Haveli had great service and great garlic naans too, so I hope they make it but I'm afraid NY Grump is right, the NYU students who helped build little India into a busy area have left it for more Facebook and YouTube friendly environments, where being loud and being seen and getting drunk and hooking up come before the cultural, food and dining experience.
Good post. I will be facing some of these issues as well..
