How long did it take before someone tagged the 'Girls' mural on East 12th Street?
12 days, give or take a day. We spotted the artists starting the mural on the weekend of Dec. 13… Could have been worse…
And we still have a few more weeks before the show's new season on HBO…

When I saw this go up I knew it was only a matter of time before somebody defaced it. The East Village may be 'cleaned-up' and 'safer' but there are some things, like tagging, that will probably never go away.
ReplyDeleteI am against defacement of property, but these ads are already a defacement of property, so it seems like no harm done in this case.
ReplyDeleteWe should simply ban oversized advertising in the city, as other cities have successfully done.

I don't like this show but grafitti is just wrong. The cops really need to start making some arrests. A night or two in jail will curtail some of this activity.
ReplyDeleteI miss Chico's NYC mural in this space. I don't know why the management of Table 12 painted over it when they opened. I guess they didn't like the old East Village. Remember it? There was that cool dog on it.
ReplyDeleteAt least it wasn't on the faces because those were really well done.
ReplyDeleteThat show sucks.

ReplyDeleteYou realize what such a ban would do to Times Square and other landmarked signage.
I agree it is not nice on a residential street but it is temporary.
The SNL parody with Tina Fey nailed it.
ReplyDeleteYa that skit's spot on Crazy Eddie!

ReplyDeleteYes, it would improve Times Square significantly. It's a complete eyesore as is.

ReplyDeleteSomeone actually tagged this even earlier, with a felt-tip marker, when it was only half finished. The ugly scrawl was painted over.
I know it's a commercial work but Chico can't wash these dudes' paintbrushes, sorry.

ReplyDeleteIt's the theatre district, its lights have dazzled visitors for decades, the coke sign in the 1980's was a masterpiece of pop art. Commercial area's need signs, neighborhood signs like bodegas and restaurants are tiny in comparison and absolutely necessary.
Does that even count as a "tag"?
ReplyDeletelooks like a "hipster" tag - all designy and neon
