It appears the City made it illegal to turn right on 14th Street and 4th Avenue/Union Square East (the corner in near Beth Israel). The NYPD has a cop stationed ticketing everyone dropping off patients — everyone from Access-A-Ride, to cabs, to residents like myself who are clueless about the updated traffic measure.
The cop didn't leave us with a warning, instead gifted us a $135 ticket.
I'm writing you to hopefully warn other folks to they don't have to help this guy make his quota.

There is a No Left Turn sign, which the reader notes is sort of obvious since traffic goes north along 4th Avenue/Union Square East. Otherwise, there aren't any other signs indicating No Right Turns between 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.
wouldn't surprise me if there is a covert movement within NYPD to generate these outrage stories to smear Di Blasio. people have to understand the right wing are bad losers and bullies.

ReplyDeleteDid the driver push through pedestrians who had right of way (like so many do) - than that's a different ticket.
Was the driver dropping someone off in a no parking zone? Maybe that's what the ticket was for - that corner is always a clusterfuck with vehicles double and triple parked. The hospital needs to find a place for safe drop off rather than a major busy N/S avenue.
If you're going west on 14th St and turning right onto Un Sq East, there's always been a sign stating no right turns 7am-8pm. It's on the northeast corner. Google street view it, it's there.
ReplyDeleteAnd there is a good reason for the sign - buses can't leave the bus stop if cars are waiting to turn right in this heavy pedestrian zone and the 14th st bus already known to be ridiculously slow.

ReplyDeleteI hope you folks fight those tickets, then write to the DOT Commissioner about the lack of signage and name the person who issued the ticket, and let his commanding officer explain why this was allowed or even important. I can think of a dozen ways that officer could have used his time to better serve our community. FIGHT THAT TICKET!
There is a sign on the pole on the far side of the intersection. Walked by it today. The pole in the picture does not have one, but did when Google went by it in street view in 2011.
