Wacky Wok has closed

The 4-year-old Wacky Wok has closed on Avenue D and East Ninth Street. The owner of the healthyish Pan Asian restaurant told WW fan Zachary Mack simply that "costs were over running our income. We needed more walk-by traffic."

Wacky Wok was also known for a fairly aggressive menu-dropping campaign around the East Village … with menu droppers who could easily slip into the Wacky Wok time continium vortex.

As we wrote in September 2012:

At some point, every single home or business or church or structure of any kind — empty, under-construction or abandoned — in the East Village has had a Wacky Wok menu placed on the front door. Multiple times. Maybe daily. Probably daily.

Regardless, we mostly liked their food… they will be missed.

And RIP Wacky Wok Menu Dropper Guy…

  1. Ah man, this sucks. I live on D and ordered Wacky Wok fairly regularly. Their food was fresh and inexpensive. Always wondered if they'd be able to make it on the block.

  3. Walk-by traffic can be an issue. However, I'd often get carpet-bombed with menus yet was outside the delivery zone on Seamless. Some lack of business savvy here.

  4. This is terrible news. We LOVE Wacky Wok. I was always a little worried about its location. Wish there was somewhere on Avenue A that made sense for them.

I will also miss walking into other restaurants and seeing their menu jammed in the door.

  5. Anyone know who owns the building and what will happen to the space.

Sorry for the loss, but maybe it had something to do with the wok being wacky. Maybe if the wok had been "hot" or "carbon steel" things might have been different.

  7. It had to do with the wacky bodies bursting up through the floors!

  9. Wacky Wok is set to become another bodega. Just what Avenue D needs.

  10. This is terrible news. We ordered from them at least twice a week. I hope something else opens up that is as healthy, inexpensive and tasty. Sad.
