Petition calls for an end to so many 'shitty' pizzerias opening up on the Lower East Side

Are you tired of all the $1 pizza places popping up around the neighborhood? Then you're not alone. There's a petition campaign underway directed toward Community Board 3 that calls for more food options… Here's the description of the petition via Change.org:

This is an effort to promote diversity in low to mid-priced food options for New York City's Lower East Side.

Are you sick and tired of pizzerias opening up all over the Lower East Side? With the closures of so many restaurants in the neighborhood, our low to mid-priced food options are dwindling. Pizzerias have over-saturated this part of Manhattan. Sign this petition and maybe Community Board 3 will take notice. *Enough of the L.E.S. pizzeria takeover!*

The petition was launched by No More L.E.S. Pizzerias. The person behind the campaign has lived on the LES for 18 years. We asked the petitioner a few questions via Facebook:

"Yeah, every time a restaurant shutters, it seems like a shitty pizza place is born. I'm sick of it."

What would you like to see an an alternative?

"Anything besides a chain or $1 pizza. More small local joints like Mimi & Coco's Japanese spot. It's just so hard for small places to cover the rent and expenses and still scrape a living wage together."

And without asking...

"And if you were wondering, Rosario's and Nonna's are my favorite pizzerias in the hood."

You may find the petition here.

  3. These type of endeavours are unsustainable in the Ghoulinai-Bloomberg nightlife districts. There is no booze involved, and its all about the heroin economy - sell something at 100x its actual value.

  4. Being facetious, turbo.

It's the token response anytime someone feels aggrieved these days.

  7. The best way to make sure a "shiity pizza" place does not stay open is to not buy any shitty $1 pizza. Would the person behind this petition prefer anyone foodie place with lines of tourists clogging the sidewalks?

  8. Ah, yes, the nonsensical *yawn* or "zzzzzzzzz" comment who has really nothing to say by the rash and obtuse self-righteous.

A petition for less fauxrish bars, and trendy restaurants, or eateries as the hipster artisanal foodies would like to refer to them, catering to the vapid and shallow sheeple like the aforementioned prosaic hypocrite. Oy Vey!

  9. I would welcome ANYTHING besides another East Village pizzeria. No more $1 slice places, no more brick oven expensive places, NO MORE PIZZERIAS!

  10. More vegan options; vegan food doesn't have to be expensive. After all, there's no meat or dairy, so it stores well too.

  11. This petition is to promote diversity in our East Village food options. No more $1 slice pizzeria. No more expensive brick oven pizzerias. NO MORE PIZZERIAS! There should be limitations for new pizzeria openings that are similar to the ones in place for new bars (unfortunately, these aren't enforced enough). Maybe prevent new pizzerias from opening up too close to existing ones? I'm saddened at the loss of so many great EV restaurants and just want to raise awareness of the pizzeria over-saturation. Thanks and happy eating.

    does this really matter?
    too bad.

  13. Eh, i lived on Clinton St for 20 years (no longer there). I'm more saddened by the closure of the rice and beans places being replaced by super expensive trendoid restaurants. I never had a problem with the pizzarias, at least they're affordable.

Plus, if the pizza places close, it's not like a chinese take out or rice and beans joint will replace it, it will be replaced by a place selling pork buns for $8 a shot or something.

  14. ... and yet, they will whine about a halal cart.

Face it, most of East Villagers now only care about a facade of diversity, so that they can wave their "edgey & cool" flag.

If they REALLY cared about "old school" East Village, they'd all be flocking to old school restaurants, bakeries and bars instead of to the latest opening on the black.

  15. I just looked at what the petitioner wants the pizza places replaced with "Mimi and Coco." Yep, just as predicted, the "cheap" alternative he wants is a place selling $8 octupus balls.

Screw that, keep the pizza, don't like a slice get the chicken parm... yum

  16. The Bloomberg era has warn out its welcome and people are pissed off. Does everything have to be either $1 pizza or some shitty 7-11? The chains stores are beginning to close because even the transients don't want this shit. The less people spend at these places, the better the reality check will be for a greedy landlord who doubles the rent on a successful business for no other reason than he can. These landlords are predatory, don't live in the city, yet scooped up property during the recession as an investment. So people who don't even live here are ruining the city. Stop spending, they'll sell. Life will return to normal.

  17. Couldn't the petitioner, you know, open an alternative? I have no idea what this petition is supposed to do or how we can reasonably get in the business of predetermining what subclasses of businesses are acceptable to a neighborhood. I can at least understand community opposotion to bars due to noise and other adverse issues but is there really a reasonable argument that a community should be regulating one type of food establishment over another in this manner? If the community really wants cheap alternative food, they should be able to support it like they do cheap pizza. Especially in the east village, which has about as diverse a set of food options as anywhere in the united states.

  18. The forces of power in this city truly have won. You can tell this by the schizophrenic, self-contradictory, who-is-the-real-enemy, chicken with their head cut-off, nature of these comments.

  19. I got a laugh out of this, but it's really true for the whole city. No offense, but if they never open up another pizzeria or Italian red-sauce restaurant, the city will be a far better place. There are so many inexpensive kinds of food. Asian, German, Spanish, you name it.. New your SUCKS for quick inexpensive chow.

  20. There aren't that many $1 pizza places. If you don't like them, don't patronize them. Pizza is a garbage food anyhow.

  21. At least the $1 pizza places turn the pies over at a rate that gets you a slice fresh out of the oven. The other pizza places, the $2.75/slice or whatever, 9 times out of 10 they try you sell you a reheated waxy piece of crap that has been sitting for an hour. No way baby.

  22. Actually, I just looked at Mimi and Coco's; I'm not impressed with what they have to offer, and again, where's the vegan stuff?

My go-to pizzeria closed suddenly recently; Viva Herbal Pizza on 2nd avenue offered kosher-dairy cheese, but importantly had several vegan options, and even gluten-free crust. They were one of the first I knew of to have Daiya cheese, so they are sorely missed, and not just by me.

At least Nonna's has a great vegan slice; fortunately Two Boots has their "V for Vegan" slice. If any of these $1 pizza joints offered a vegan slice, I certainly wouldn't protest them.

  23. Some of us like $1 pizza and find it abhorrent to pay $3 for a plain slice. You want something else? Then open it! You can take out a loan, make no money for years, and put all of your life savings into it. Small businesses are going to open what they estimate there is a demand and market for. This petition is snobby. There are plenty of great places to eat in the neighborhood. Patronize the ones that exist if you want to see them stick around.

  24. $1 pizzerias are great for young students, NYs underemployed masses, underpaid workers who run the surrounding snooty stores and restaurants, and anyone on the go who needs a quick fix. They are not threatening to anyone. When I want great pizza I take my time and sit down at a great pizza place (like Lil Frankies!). They are not a mega-chain (like 7-11 or McDonalds) and I definitely believe they add to the landscape of the city. If I remember correctly the trend started right after the crash in '08. It was the first time in my over-20 years in NYC that I've seen a common item go down in price. This is an unbelievably pathetic "cause", I wish them the wost of luck.

  25. I'd rather have more small business owners starting up a $1 pizzeria than more boring chains like 7-11 and Dunkin' Donuts.
