Reader report: Ramen Kuboya moving away from East 5th Street

Workers have been clearing out the noodle shop here at 536 E. Fifth St. near Avenue B.

Word via @zmack is that Kuboya is on the move west to Cornelia Street. (There isn't a mention of this yet on their website or social media sites. The phone has also been disconnected.)

Perhaps the competition from the more-established Minca Ramen next door was too much.

As we understand it, a "contemporary Asian" restaurant is in the works for the 50-seat space. (See this PDF from CB3 for more details.)

536 E. Fifth St. was previously home to (briefly!) Village East Bistro and Le Gamin.

  1. Kuboya had great fried chicken and $2 beers. The music was always the right volume. The bathroom had a nice signed letter from the owner. Good place. Sad to see it go.

  2. Cute little place with a kind of homeyness and friendliness that is rare, for any restaurant around here but especially for a Japanese one. Bummed to see it go but I have to cop to preferring the ramen next door, which is pretty hard to beat.

  3. Minca is one of the best of EV, and it probably was a little harder to compete when the area is more fitting for destination restaurants, instead of walk-bys.

  4. Speaking of things closing to move, does anyone know what is going on with Oyama on 1st Ave between 11th and 12th Street? It's one of those cheap sushi places that I really enjoyed for delivery but lately, they haven't been open...
