We're sad to report that one of our favorite places, First Avenue Pierogi and Deli, is closing — the owners have decided to retire.
Their last day at 130 First Ave. just south of St. Mark's Place is July 2.
And there isn't any evil, rent-hike happy landlord to blame: Proprietor Wieslawa Kurowycky's family also owns the building. After 30 years it's just time to retire. So you'll still see the family around…
Meanwhile, you have a few weeks left to stock up on inexpensive (and delicious) pierogies, blintzes, soups, potato pancakes, etc.
Damn, that's bad news, EVG. You have no idea how many times I've gone in there after leaving the I-Bar to pick up some pierogies and soup for dinner. I will miss them.

ReplyDeleteThis is a huge loss to the hood. The owners are the nicest people ever and their food is amazing... I'm waiting for a comeback story!

ReplyDeleteI've been in the EV since 1974 and have been buying pierogies here for many years. I went by a couple of weeks ago, the shutter was down so I thought they were on vacation. As they renovated the space not long ago, I was shocked when I went by yesterday and saw the sign. Wish I had known earlier, I would have stocked up. The very best pierogies and soups. Sad. I will miss them very much.
ReplyDeleteI kept going by wondering why it was closed and then there was a sign that something else is opening up. So sad to finally learn that the store is closed! I've lived in the neighborhood for 40 years. sorry to see one of the last of the Polish Ukrainian food places gone. An old fashioned place for food to heat up, finish cooking at home. Everything was wonderful - the blintzes, the pierogi, the mushroom barley soup, the ukrainian borcht, stuffed cabbage. Good and healthy food, well prepared. I wish I knew they were closing so I could say farewell to the wonderful people who did it all.
