EVG reader Mayra Diaz passed along this photo and info just after 9 this evening:
Yellow cab hit an elderly man on a bike and left speeding away. Police and ambulance were called. Bicyclist can walk and is in ambulance.
However, Mayra noted that the cab driver returned to the scene 15 minutes later and gave a statement to the NYPD. No word if any charges were filed ...
The NYPD installed a surveillance camera at East Seventh Street and Avenue B back on June 26.
Stupid of him to run.
ReplyDeleteAll you have to do is stick around, and your "clear and free". Kill anybody you want with a car; as long as you tell the cops, "oops…"
Reminds me of the delivery guy who went through a RED LIGHT at St. Marx + Bowery, killing Spike. He told cops that she "wasn't paying attention" as she crossed the street with a GREEN LIGHT....
ReplyDeleteChris, you weren't there. No one was there but the driver so even though he may have lied to cover up any fault, you still can't say what color the light was.
ReplyDeleteUnless the motorist is clearly intoxicated, NYPD always says "No criminality suspected" and lets them off the hook. They don't even send an investigation team unless the cyclist is deemed likely to die. And even if the motorist is clearly three sheets to the wind, the prosecutor has to prove that his intoxication was the cause of the collision.
ReplyDeleteHilarious that the cabbie sped off, then thought better of it and went back to make a statement. I'm sure he'll be just fine. No biggie, especially in the Ninth, where enforcement of speeding and failure to yield violations is not exactly a priority: http://transalt.org/issues/enforcement/resources/v0reportcard&utm_source=streetbeat-Jul312014&utm_medium=email&utm_content=version1&utm_campaign=2014POGO%20Vision%20Zero
@anon 9:32am -- I think we can say what color the light was because as I recall, the woman was run down by a truck that was turning into the crosswalk where she was crossing. So either he blew through a red light or else she had a green light.
ReplyDeleteThat cabbie should still be charged with hit and run even though he came back.
