Report: Avenue B's Back 40 closes after 7 years

Back 40, one of the first farm-to-table restaurants here, closed for good after service on Sunday.

Chef-owner Peter Hoffman told Eater, who first reported on this closure, that "a difficult landscape and lease uncertainty" led to the decision to shutter the 7-year-old restaurant at 190 Avenue B near East 12th Street.

    I lived at 188 Ave B in the late 80's. 190 was a burnt out shell being used as a crack den, which was was often set on fire at night.
    That park behind the buildings on 12th was just rubble, where folks from 190 turned tricks for cash or drugs.

    I was sort of amazed to see this place come in and was a little wary (OMG gentrification!!), but I have to say they were a pretty nice place for a drink and a plate of food. Nothing too extreme or "bro-ish". I can only wonder what will now appear there.

    I am sad to see this place go. My wife and I had a wedding brunch here back in May, and the staff was lovely. I hope everyone quickly finds new employment.

    Another vacancy on Avenue B. Soon enough the avenue will be ripe for drug pushers and prostitution. Congrats CB3.

    Checkers. Horrible. Went there yesterday, ordered one of their cheeseburger combo/fries meal, how bad could it be? Makes McDonald's look like Peter Lugar's.

    Yeah, this is pretty sad. It wasn't too pricey, and wasn't too fancy, but it was a nice step up for a special occasion or a visitor. One of those 'well, if they can't make it, who can?' deals. And I really like fried chicken.
