The SantaCon pre-party is in Hell's Kitchen

There seems to be some interest in where the annual SantaCon pub crawl will take place on Saturday.

As noted yesterday, SantaCon organizers told Community Board 3 officials that the official event will NOT take place in the East Village/Lower East Side. (Unlike last year.)

Apparently if you donate $10 to charity you get the early route information for SantaCon. (If not, then you have to wait until Friday for the details.)

One curious East Village resident forked over the $10 … and received a button that gets him or her into a private party at Pacha on West 46th Street Saturday morning at 11.

Given the starting time of this SantaCon private party, the resident figures Hell's Kitchen will be the neighborhood the groups hits on Saturday …

  2. A SantaCon/Police protest mashup is coming to the EV. Drom at 85 Ave A is hosting a SantaCon fundraiser for the family of Eric Garner Saturday night. At least it's for a good cause.

  3. Not that I intend to stir up any unnecessary worry...

But the last time they started in Hell's Kitchen, they did eventually end up on the LES.

Of course, they say they're not doing that, and for all I know, the people behind the Santacon website probably intend to proceed elsewhere (haven't they been here enough in the last 5 years, anyway? They must be sick of the East Village already) but if the 6-12 most frattastic bars in the East Village are hosting specials for costumed revelers on Saturday, that's still a sizable crowd to disperse through the neighborhood in the early evening.

Not enough to be a top headline in the news, but probably enough to drum up SOME irritation from people who are... not inclined to overlook it.

  5. Awesome. So by the time the Santas splinter off from the main route they'll come down this way dead-ass drunk and cause the same fucking misery

  6. Hell's Kitchen is not safe. The traffic on 9th and 10th avenues is much greater than 1st or 2nd down here.

  8. This means nothing. They'll still be in the neighborhood on Saturday. Just means that most won't be going to the pre-party in Midtown North, but head right down to Midtown South -- the Santa Con party central. And next year, it's pre-party won't be in Hell's Kitchen, but instead it will be in Hell Square again.

Moreover, Santacon is basically taunting the Midtown North Police in Hell's Kitchen after the precint last year urged the bar owners not to welcome the Santaconners.

And by retaining Siegel, equating this to freedom of speech much like a protest, Santacon's slogan now will be "Hands-up. Don't Sue!".

  9. The $10 is hardly a charitable donation unless aerialists, DJs, and club owners are now people in need of charity.

Seriously, I would have some begrudging respect for these people if they'd knock it off with the culture-jamming and charity bullshit and just admit that they're a bunch of simpletons who want to get blackout drunk and act like hosebags for a day.

  11. Now this is some Yuletide baloney. SantaCon says they are scaling back this year due to the police protests on Saturday. Tell that to the thousands of drunks who have already made this an annual holiday tradition.

IMPORTANT! MAJOR CHANGES IN SANTACON FORMAT!

DUE TO THE PLANNED PROTESTS THIS SATURDAY, SANTACON IS SCALING BACK THIS WEEKEND’S FESTIVITIES IN ORDER TO CREATE THE LOWEST POSSIBLE IMPACT ON THE CITY WE LOVE WHILE STILL MAINTAINING OUR GLORIOUS TRADITIONS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.

SANTACON HAS RESPECT AND COMPASSION FOR THE HARD-WORKING MUNICIPAL ORGANIZATIONS OF NYC, AS WELL AS FOR THE IMPORTANT CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATIONS CURRENTLY SHAPING OUR CITY’S FUTURE. THUS, WE ARE CHANGING THE FORMAT OF THIS YEAR’S SANTACON.

THIS EVENING, ALL PARTICIPATING SANTACON BARS AND VENUES WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON NYCSANTACON.COM. THEIR HALLS WILL BE DECKED, AND THEY’LL BE READY AND WAITING FOR SANTA TO COME DOWN THEIR CHIMNEYS. PLEASE PATRONIZE THESE VENUES ONLY. IF A VENUE ISN’T ON THIS LIST, IT’S BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT YOU THERE. PLEASE MOVE AROUND THROUGHOUT THE DAY FROM VENUE TO VENUE BUT SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME INSIDE, NOT ON THE STREETS.

And this isn't a pub crawl?

  13. The Pour House (Third Avenue + 11th Street) has a sign that they are an "Official" Santa Con Bar. Where are all the investigative reporters of the New York media to throw light on (a) who organizes these events (b) how much money is actually raised for charities (c) who is taking the tax break for any charitable donations, and (d) how much does police overtime cost the taxpayers.

  14. Can we make our own holiday tradition? A game called egg man Santa? You gain points by egging a Santa. The more Santa's you egg, the more you prove you love the Holiday's.(only Santa's participating in Santa con will count)

  16. FIGMENT is not now, never has been, in any way, shape or form, part of the organization of SantaCon.

When there is a captive audience of thousands guaranteed, what charity doesn't want to represent to collect donations?

Bowery Boogie, feel free to show up and fundraise for yourself, you're welcome!

  17. Maybe they'll take a left turn instead of a right and wind up in Harlem?

    I've seen weirder things happen.
