Updated: Skylight falls from St. Brigid's; Virgin Mary destroyed
There was some drama on East Eighth Street at Avenue B early this morning after one of the skylights from the Church of Saint Brigid – Saint Emeric came crashing down from the roof... @MediaJorge shared these two photos showing the FDNY on the scene...
As far as we know there weren't any injuries... we'll update when we get more information on what happened...
The combined parish reopened on Jan. 27, 2013.
Updated 10:18 a.m.
EVG reader Peter from 8th St. shared these photos from this morning...
The plastic encasement that houses the statue of the Virgin Mary was also damaged...
... as well as the Virgin Mary...

Jesus Christ!
ReplyDeleteDammit. There goes the last virgin in the East Village.
ReplyDeleteWhen I walked past there yesterday around 2pm the plastic case outside was already damaged from the wind.
ReplyDeleteEl diablo!
ReplyDeleteThis could be a sign from God. This church has a long history of helping the poor and homeless but since it was saved by the community I have to wonder if the new Priest and Parish members are doing enough to carry on the Church's traditonal mission. Perhaps God is not happy.
ReplyDeleteI know you're probably just kidding John, but as a new parishioner, I'd like to say what a wonderful job I think they are doing at St. Brigid-St. Emeric. My church, Mary Help of Christians, was torn down and the people here welcomed me with open arms. Their mission is carried out with love and kindness on every level, and I consider myself very lucky to have joined this parish. Halleluiah! and I trust that a new statue of the virgin of Guadalupe will grace that corner of the church again very soon.
ReplyDeleteHey Penley - How about some examples? "I wonder if" doesn't exactly inspire confidence in your reporting, although it does bring up issues of slander and libel.
ReplyDeleteIt's a sign... not sure of what.
ReplyDeleteI was a former member of Saint Brigid's. The fact that another parish was allowed to move in entirely without the inclusion of either former St. Brigid parishioners or Mary Help of Christians parishioners is troubling. That the statue of Saint Emerick was placed in the front of the church and the statue of St. Brigid placed in the back is even more troubling. A parish priest that can't speak English and is never there is insulting to the whole parish. I think it is Saint Brigid who is making comment. This is an Irish historical church beginning with the Irish famine survivors. Some respect please!
ReplyDeleteHey Mary Ann Hart, as a former altar boy of Irish descent, I really think you should ask what would Pope Francis say about this situation? I still have major issues with the RCC but this Pope, a Jesuit, seems to walk the walk. Ok? And, always, Dominic, go frisk 'em!
