Astoria Bier & Cheese closer to bringing craft beer and grilled cheese to Broadway

Help wanted signs are up on Broadway near East Ninth Street... where a new cafe called Milk and Hops has been in the works since last summer...

We don't know too much about the concept. Paperwork (PDF!) filed ahead of the August 2014 CB3/SLA committee meeting revealed that Milk and Hops would serve grilled cheese sandwiches (among other items) and craft beer. The owners are behind Astoria Bier and Cheese, which has two locations out in Astoria.

  1. Craft beer experience? Do craft beer taps work differently?

  2. @ Anon 11:22- Yes they do. You must exercise great care so that none of the bubbles get bruised. An advanced degree in Ancient Babylonian Astrology is needed as well.

  3. No, I'm sure that craft beer experience requirement has more to do with being a smug preening know it all.

  4. I know someone who moved to NYC in 2007 and the only place she could afford was Astoria, but she would take the 45 mins. ride to the EV and did almost everything here -- yoga class, shopping, dining, coffee shops, bar hopping, etc. You could always see the change in her as soon as he gets out of the station and start walking at St. Mark's PL. -- proud and exuberant, as if she lived in the EV. But at about two years ago she started to hardly leave Astoria as she says it is now more diverse and energetic and she feels that EV has become an overpriced suburban mall.

It used to be that something from the EV would open an outpost in other neighborhoods. Now it's the other way around -- Pita Pan, Astoria Bier and Cheese, anything "Brooklyn" are opening-up in the EV. (Not to mention that businesses that made the EV cool are now leaving to go to GV and UES.)

As for Astoria Bier and Cheese, it is
part cheese store, part craft beer bar and restaurant, where the taps are on the wall, (yeah, I know, another trendy concept.) Friendly and knowledgeable staff and surprisingly good food and drinks, this coming from someone who's a snob to those who are beer snobs. Don't know if Milk and Hops would be set up the same, I say yes. Welcome to Astoria!
