Tal Bagels opening soon next to possible new home of Ess-A-Bagel

Going out of the neighborhood for a moment to discuss a favorite topic (spoiler: bagels). So the lease-less Ess-A-Bagel closed up their home of nearly 40 years last Sunday on First Avenue and East 21st Street.

Ownership maintains that they will reopen nearby.

According to Town & Village, Ess-A-Bagel has expressed interest in the now-closed laundromat space the next block up at No. 363…

Seems like a good spot. Or maybe it was. Several readers pointed out that Tal Bagels is opening another NYC branch… right next door. Coming soon signs arrived last week…

  1. That same TAL Bagel sign is hanging over the also closed Rose Restaurant next door to the Essa-A location. Strange.

  2. They're part of a local chain with several stores uptown. Their yelp reviews seem to suggest while they might have good strategic corporate management, their store management suffers.

  3. Some shenanigans going on here. Originally the landlord of the Ess-a space (Moelis) said they were bringing in TAL Bagels to the corner. You gotta wonder what kind of game is going on. Whatever... bagels make me really freakin' fat, but I loved Ess-a's Whitefish salad, best I ever had.

  4. The linear verbeage confuses me. Is it meant to be "appetizers?" Or are they declaring, don't worry, our smoked fish is not only edible, its "appetizing!" ... And there's salad too. Or is it "smoked fish salad" that is either appetizing or available in addition to appetizers. If its just smoked fish salad, and no sliced smoked fish they are going to get creamed by ess-a-bagel's reincarnation.

  5. Update: The Ess-a-Bagel store suddenly has a big new For Rent banner up on the storefront. There is no sign of Tal Bages in either of the 2 locations they are supposedly renting, just a small banner on the smaller space saying Coming In June. It's almost June, and noone has been working on renovations for weeks. Did the deal with Tal Bagels fall through? Did we just lose another long-time local business for nothing?
