Gentrifire, Explosification, over-developocolipse, real est’plosion, gentriblasting, flamevelopment, firetrification… Can someone please come up with a word for this new horror we can all look forward to?
I can bet that more than one person is already hard at work right now trying to sell the rights to build something extra-glassy in this spot. Prime Real Estate. Ugh. And, if you don’t like this new kind of real estate development then you really should move.
"I can bet that more than one person is already hard at work right now trying to sell the rights to build something extra-glassy in this spot. Prime Real Estate. Ugh. And, if you don’t like this new kind of real estate development then you really should move."
That's exactly what I did! I'm so glad I'm out of there (I left on March 15th.)
I used to smell gas in my hovel (apartment) from time to time. It was rent stabilized so it was pure hell trying to get repairs. I guess I got lucky.
I don't understand all you people, if you don't like what's happening with the neighborhood then just move. There are plenty of suburbs that are looking for new occupants. Also, get together, pool your money and buy one of these buildings and run it the way you like. Reduce the rents to $400 a month, see if an oil company will delivery your heating oil for $0.10 a gallon, try to negotiate with the City about paying $0 in real estate taxes, don't buy building coverage insurance, ship in your own water so you don't have to pay what the City charges for water/sewer. A lot of these building in this area are owned by 'mom-and-pop' operations who took the chance on buying something in the 60s and 70s, when your parents were working their corporate jobs and didn't have the foresight or balls to take a chance on a real estate investment. All you hear on this site is deride the landlord, but it's just jealousy, because a lot of these landlords are first generation immigrants who worked hard and took a chance, while you and your parents have been here for generations and don't have a pot to piss in. Things change, if you don't like it MOVE!!
ANON @ 11:10 It's not the Mom and Pop landlords who are ruining NYC, it's the big money developer who...well, you must know what they're doing, you work for them, right? Glad you're taking this opportunity for re-education! Isn't it just like a developer and their imps to use any excuse to spew their warped party line! I know, I know...if I don't like what you're writing, why don't I just MOVE???
To Anonymous at 11:10am: A lot of the owners, doing what they call "luxury renovations" that pack many new residents paying high rents into the new, tiny spaces, are very big multimillionaire landlords that own many buildings in this neighborhood and across the city. According to your logic, they should be allowed to proceed in this manner with the resulting risk to the inhabitants of the neighborhood. No. If they want to improve their profits with renovations, let them do it with qualified, union labor and proper oversight from city agencies.
Here we go with "just move". Please tell us where the magical land of plentiful living wage jobs and affordable housing is.
Speaking of $0 real estate taxes, how about all of the people buying multimillion dollar condos with dirty money who pay no real estate taxes and get huge tax breaks? Or the CEO who got a huge bonus or a 5 million dollar golden parachute while the people who really work hard in the same company didn't even get cost of living raises?
Racism still exists throughout America - if you don't like it MOVE! Women get paid 25% less than men - if you don't like it MOVE! Wages are down throughout the country - if you don't like it MOVE! TO WHERE???
Please, let's not stand up for anything. If you've got a problem with the way things are, then just turn your back, tuck your tail, and go somewhere else.
Hasn't "if you don't like it MOVE!" jumped the shark already??? There has never been a more balls-less comment! Grow a pair and stand your ground... for something, anything. Esp' when our neighbors are being killed and injured for real estate profits. Is there a better reason?
To all who have assigned blame, pointed fingers and vented out, stop. You all should be ashamed of yourself. People have lost their homes, their pets, their livelihood, their businesses, their cars, and from what it seems, their loved ones. Get a grip. Be positive and try to help the situation, or perhaps others for a change. Call 311 and try to see how you can help the community. A lot of you on here are petulant, misguided, angry winers. ENOUGH!
This is definitely a case of criminal behavior that led to this tragedy and it is ironic that some who always call for the police to arrest criminals are now calling for people to be "ashamed of themselves" for doing exactly the same thing. Total Hypocrisy and BS from those who want double standards for the rich and the poor.

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder how many developers were on the phone by 4:00 yesterday afternoon fighting to bid on the space.
