The Nite Owl opens for night owls and probably other people

North River's transformation into the Nite Owl looks complete at 166 First Ave. near East 10th Street.

Several EVG readers told us that The Nite Owl was open for business on Saturday evening...

Said one reader: "Not a single table and chair left. All high tops with stools and the bar. So much for a restaurant."

The Nite Owl is serving food. Here's a look at the menu on display outside… featuring bar-food items like chicken nuggets, smoked deviled eggs, burgers and tacos…

We first noticed North River closed after service on Feb. 21… a sign on the door said there "there are changes afoot at North River." North River, which served American-style comfort food from chef Adam Starowicz, opened in December 2013.

  1. Another fucking bait and switch!
Get approved with for a real restaurant and then open another Bro Drunk Bar...
Anything we can do about this bullshit?

  2. How times and the EV has changed. 3 bro passed my home hooting, hollering and staggering (one guy dropped his phone) and it was only 11PM. Can we import some muggers back into the neighborhood, they would make a fortune.

  3. How THE FUCK do restaurants get approved, then all of a sudden turn into a bar? Unbelievable how clear cut this shit is time and time again and how simple it would be for the community board and the SLA to have a solution or fix the problem.

  5. The saddest part is that North River was really good.. not sure why they would want to just convert to yet another crappy bar.

  6. Same annoying people, making the same annoying comments about every new restaurant that opens in this neighborhood. Why live in the city? Do yourself and everyone around u a favor and move to jersey or long island, or even better the Poconos.

  7. We are not making comments about restaurants... We are making comments about how it sucks to lose restaurants to bars which are only frequented by tourists and NYU bro's....

  8. WIthout being judgmental, this is more of a fllp/flopping space rather than the usual "old classic friend lost" situation. Looking back through my records, the space has been a lounge or bar more often than a restaurant in the past 20 years, going backwards before North River it was: La Zarza (tapas), Tapis Rouge, Idol, Arshile and Izzy Bar.
