Blockheads bringing their San Francisco-style burritos to the East Village
[EVG file photo]
The city's seventh Blockheads is in the works to take over the Unidentified Flying Chickens space at 60 Third Ave. near East 11th Street. Aside from a full-service dining room, this location will also offer take out and delivery.
Brothers Ken and Don Sofer opened the first of the casual, San Francisco-style Mexican restaurants on Third Avenue and East 34th Street in 1993. They also own the Benny's Burritos in the West Village. (Ken Sofer helped open the East Village Benny's, but sold his stake 10 years later.)
Blockheads is on this month's CB3/SLA committee agenda for a new liquor license.
In February, the owners of Taproom 307 went before CB3 for the space, but were met with resistance.
As for UFO, they never seemed to catch on, though, as we've pointed out, the Korean fried chicken specialists made it longer than the previous tenant — the 3-week-old Après.

Got a decent supply of diuretics laying around?
ReplyDeleteThis is good news, they are popular and affordable and have lots of veggie options. I've had enough with the designer concept foodie places, just give me a nice hot plate of food and a margarita and I'm happy.
ReplyDeleteBlockheads doesn't hold a candle to the Ave A Benny's that just got booted out.
ReplyDeleteWhere do people get all of this money to throw away? Say, that gelato place down the avenue just closed and I've got a great idea -- I'll open a gelato shop! Fancy pizza joint on the corner just went bust, hmmm, I'll open a fancy pizza joint! Sure seems like there's been a big turnover in froyo shops in the EV but mine will be different! When the novelty wears off, here's lookin' at you, Burritoville.
ReplyDeleteMaaaad burritos in the area, we don't need blockheads
ReplyDeleteThis is shitty news. What is going on with space? It doesn't seem to have much luck....
ReplyDeleteThey do unlimited brunch bullshit, FYI!!! Neighbors beware!!! This is not an innocent restaurant.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know when Rosies is opening on 2nd ave?
ReplyDeleteCrap stretch of 3rd Ave. I see this as the lesser of two evils. The really weird random times I am in a blockheads I've had a fine time. The alternative Taproom 307 venture would have been a nightmare. Penny Farthing, Brazen Fox, Durdens (easily the worst name of a place ever, bro) there are enough really bad basic bars around already.
ReplyDeleteTo the person who said they don't compare to Benny's: you do know they own the Benny's on Greenwich, right? I was at the one in Midtown last week, before I knew this, and said to my friends "This is just like Benny's on Ave A".
