1 way to respond when someone parks a motorcycle in the hallway
A reader shared this from a building on Avenue A.
And here's how a neighbor responded to this choice of parking spots with a straightforward, two-word Urban Etiquette Sign...

It's probably safer on the street.
ReplyDeleteWhat an inconsiderate and self-entitled prick for putting his motorcycle in the middle of the hallway. Isn't that a fire safety violation as he's blocking the hallway?
ReplyDeleteHe's lucky someone hasn't slashed his tires.
I would've punctured the tires.
ReplyDeleteIf I lived in that building, that bike would be sitting at the bottom of the stairs in a little pile of pieces.
ReplyDeleteThis is clearly a case where vandalism is justified.
ReplyDelete- East Villager
O.M.G. I had to like, turn to the side to get by it to go and walk my toy shih tzu. Jeeeez the nerve of this asshole!
ReplyDeleteAs the bike has a gas container it is a fire hazard in addition to being a hazard in case of emergencies. What if someone in bldg needed paramedics or go to the hospital? Worse part of people are their major sense of entitlement as if everyone is just living in their world.
ReplyDeleteI would have understood that there was probably a very good reason he had to put it there, and since it probably has never happened before, I would assume it would never happen again, and I would go about my day not stewing the way some people do who don't even live in the building.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day that bike would have been long gone on its way to being sold in a another borough. Why bother with a note?
ReplyDeleteWhiney Bitch, you're the reason why God invented birth control and the reason why the Devil slipped your mama a placebo that fateful, dreadful night ...
ReplyDeleteComplain to 311. I think the fire department will issue a fine and remove it.
ReplyDeleteA phone call to the local FDNY station might be more effective than an "urban etiquette" sign.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't like motorcycles blocking your hallway in a five floor walk up you should move!!!!
ReplyDeleteOk. Now that's out of the way. WTF was this idiot thinking?!?
Where is the building's owner and the fire dept.? If I owned the building, the tenant who allowed this would be out on his ass.
ReplyDeleteHappened once years ago in my building. Call the FD. They will not be happy and motorcycle man will be in a heap of trouble. Like the other poster here, it's a fire hazard. A tank of gas in the hallway. The owner of this bike is an idiot
ReplyDeleteThis is so dangerous. I hope someone from the building has contacted 311 to report the bike and have it removed.
ReplyDeleteHe was playing with his phone and wasn't watching where he was going.
ReplyDeleteGet used to it...
A call to the FDNY would have fixed this idiocy in a jiffy.
ReplyDelete5:27pm blows (or is) the motorcycle owner.
ReplyDelete"Fuck off". Isn't that just the paper like "from the desk of"? But yeah they can suck it.
ReplyDeleteA couple of slashes to the seat would have fixed this situation.
ReplyDeleteJust a note to anyone who's going to be buying a bike or a motorcycle: buy your locks *before* you pick up the bike. Seriously, start researching what you need to lock up your bike *now*.
ReplyDeleteYears ago, a neighbor of mine used to park his bike in the front hall so that it was locked to the bannister of the staircase and partially ascending the stairs—ready for a quick getaway.
ReplyDeleteAt the time, I carried my Swiss Army knife with me, so it was simple to puncture one of the tires as I went by, and eventually he got the message.
I mean, the bike parking the landlord has provided is way out in the courtyard and exposed to the elements, but I don't think anyone should use the stairs as their personal bike [or motorcycle] parking.
Call FDNY and it will be taken care of. Blocking egress AND having gasoline in the hallway - 2 major items that the FDNY will take VERY seriously.
