Here then, the new dorm on Cooper Square

After shedding most of its construction netting at the beginning of the year, workers removed the sidewalk bridge this week here on Cooper Square at East Sixth Street… showing off the dorm that will house students from Marymount Manhattan College starting this fall…

Marymount's campus is on East 71st Street, so the students will have a bit of a commute to class...

Previously on EV Grieve:
Something 28,998 square feet or so coming to Cooper Square (and goodbye Cooper 35 Asian Pub?)

Here's what's coming to 35 Cooper Square: 9-story dormitory

Proposed dorm for former 35 Cooper Square looks to be 4 floors taller

City OKs 13-floor dorm for Cooper Square

Updated: Here's what the newest East Village dorm will look like

Dig bottoms out on Cooper Square; here comes the dorm, here comes the dorm!

This pretty much renders the first 12 north-facing floors unrentable. How do you spell "schadenfreude"?

Why would they put their dorm all the way down here!????
Real sad.

More annoying students!

Do we take bets - 3 years before the conversion to luxury coops? 5 years?

Why down here you ask. Students want to be in the hood cause it's cool. Guess they would rather take the train to school then out drinking & screaching.
The developer gets a big $ break building for education, and only has to be used for that reason for 10 years until it can be sold as hotel/apts. here comes the profits, there goes the hood.

Too nice a building for dorm unless dorm fees are above $3000 per month. I agree expect this to go condo and one of those dicks from Bravo will have a party.

Maybe we, East Village residents, should start charging "babysitting" fees, oops, I mean counseling fees. We live in a college town. Marymount???? I go out at 8:00 p.m. on a Saturday and I see very young girls falling down drunk. At 2:00 a.m., 3 a.m. I see very young girls being pushing into cabs, by young boys. I used to loudly say " Do you know these boys?". No response from the girls. I am tired of "babysitting". I watched a very drunk young girl fall out of a restaurant, through a unlocked french door. Luckily, she did not bash her skull on the sidewalk. Last week around midnight there was a young man stumbling around First Avenue trying to catch a cab. How about it parents, why don't you take care of your kids, instead of just dumping them on us. These kids are your responsibility. Instead, we have to listen to their screaming, step over their vomit, and worse. No more dorms. You are also right about the luxury housing. Dorms, hotels, are all built with conversion in mind.

I've got a kid. He sees these drunk wackos all over the neighborhood. I never try to shield him from it because I hope that it is a clear Exhibit A about my opinions about 'Greek Life' shit and general 'go to college to grow up and find yourself (and your liquor tolerance)' shit.

When I was a kid, I had this misapprehension that most of university was an opportunity to dig in deep to academic interests. That *is* there for the very well-self-directed and those who have great confidence in their path and the ability to shut the other shit out. Most of us cannot do this easily in this culture when we are 18 or 19. I really think one should be 'grown up' before going to university.

Don't blow it.

Oh to be young again in the East Village.

Curious to know why Marymount does not have a problem with their students commuting a fair distance from their dorms, yet the powers that be at NYU have decreed their simps are too precious a commodity to have to travel - in a special busm, no less - down to the Financial District to take classes, meaning they HAVE to be allowed to (over)build ONLY in the EV and WV.

2:19 PM,

The Standard East Village immediately offered rooms to those displaced by the gas explosion.

Explain to me how that is karma.
