Messing with the hydrangeas prompts sharply worded Urban Etiquette Sign on East 7th Street

Spotted in a building on East Seventh Street…

To the low-life, bottom-feeder who saw fit to cut the blossoms of the hydrangea plant in the back yard: May you contact a painful disease, and you suffer mercilessly! You are sub-human.

Your fellow tenants

  1. Seriously? Over flowers? I can't imagine what the bullies who live in this building would would do if a gum wrapper had been dropped in the common hallway. No wonder we have and need gun control laws in NYC.

  2. It takes a special kind of dirt bag to trim the flowers like that. JERK!!!

  3. Yes. Seriously. People can't even enjoy something as simple as flowers growing without some jerk cutting them all off for themselves. Sorry you're too much of a narcissist to understand this.

  4. Obviously hyperbolic, but the flower thief deserves some censure.

We have a similar problem. Our building has planters in the front. Some loser keeps stealing the entires plants, uprooting them right out of the planters!

    No apologies!

  6. For the logically challenged @ 10:18AM, defacing/conversion of private property is not commensurate with an act of minor littering, nor is a handwritten letter of protest the equivalent of gunning someone down. But we all acknowledge the pains you've taken to defend the indefensible and to rebrand the righteously angry as bullies. Incredible. Here's some real hyperbole for you: I thank our elites every day for their systematic soft-killing of the populace through diet, injections and injunctions. Contrary to popular belief, most people are not special or even necessary. In fact, the greatest service they can perform to humanity is as fertilizer. I hope some day Hydrangeas grow out of you.

  10. To 10:18:
Um... I don't even drop gum wrappers. Like, who thinks that's a good idea? Gonna guess the last few relationships of yours ended with the words "...never love anybody but yourself!" Enjoy your litter-strewn flowerless kingdom... It's lonely at the bottom.
Yeah, I'm being harsh, but I've about had it with narcissists. Imagine a world without them. Aren't they all the thieves, cheaters, and general selfish shits?

  11. Oh 2:57... THANK YOU!

  12. Response from 10:18am You people seriously need a reality check. Perhaps you should hire a security guard or put up a security camera to monitor everyone that comes and goes. Big Brother is watching you.

Mr. 2:57pm needs to check his "righteously angry" attitude in case he ends up being mistaken for being a thug, though I suspect that is already the case. Your vitriol was spread in many places throughout history in the name of the righteous and for the betterment of their people, which turned out to be at the expense of everyone else. Bottom line is nobody planted hydrangeas on those tyrants graves and they surely won't be planting any on yours.

I'd be very pleased to have hydrangeas grow out of me one day which would help the environment and beautify the landscape.

Sure it isn't very nice that someone cut all the flowers. Flowers are nice. But people should be nicer and more tolerant. The lack of tolerance displayed in the comments above tells me something....and that is that I am so very happy I don't leave in that building!!! I prefer to live in my building where everyone is respectful and pleasant to one another, helping each other out every day. We old time EV residents (since 1979) know how to act around people. Peace brother.

  13. I bet this poster was put up by one person and doesn't truly echo the sentiment of everyone in the building. I mean...why wish someone a painful disease and to suffer mercilessly? Don't we save that kind of sentiment for the really bad people?

Perhaps a softer phrasing could have been used? Why did you subject the rest of us in the building to this language? You don't speak for all of us thankfully. Some of us are better and above that type of hatred.

  14. This is aesthetic thief, plain and simple. What is the prison term for this?

  15. Just a little background. I live in the building, and am quite sure who wrote the note and who did the flower cutting. To me the note seems deliberately hyperbolic, and kind of funny. However, the person who very, very, very likely cut the flowers actually does use such language--and means it. The day after this note was written, a lily was snipped. A couple days later, pots holding marigolds were smashed and thrown in the alley. And there's been worse violence against plants in the past, and threats against people.

  16. where is this building located?

  17. @Anon. 10:04 - so please tell us, what is so "respectful and pleasant" about one selfish person deciding they have the right to steal - because theft is what it is, pure and simple - all of the flowers off a bush that was obviously intended to be for all tenants to enjoy? Cut hydrangeas can be bought in literally any of the bodegas that sell flowers, there was no reason for someone to decide they were so special that they had the right to make off with the ones planted to benefit everyone solely for their own benefit. It's that type of "me me me and no one else matters" mindset that makes this city more unlivable by the day.

  18. This was theft. Not of something that can be replaced, but something that can't. And not from some nameless corporation (not that that's any better), but from one's neighbors. And not because they were poor and needed to eat, but because they were too cheap to either go without, or purchase some from the zillion places around here that sell flowers. Dick. They're either entitled jerks or they needed to be taught that what they did is not nice. Thank you letter writer. (And Mr. Here Since 1979: I'm going to guess the person who thought those flowers were put there just for them to cut just got here, and will be gone when daddy cuts them off. Let's teach them that the EV only LOOKS like it's ok to smash every tv put out on the sidewalk, pee on all the steps, and pull up every plant they can grab while showing off for their friends. (Yeah - drunk students stole my fucking tree. It was beautiful. I was sad. I'd be a little more ok with this kind of shit if it was back in the day and dumbshit behavior was offset by art or music being created in our little corner of NYC - but we're being overrun by entitled brats who take and give nothing in return).

  19. humbled by 10:18's thoughtful response! though i don't agree that one must have been in the east village a long time to know how to act around people (or that one must necessarily be of a certain age, which is only implied by the commenter, not stated), i support his/her attitude of tolerance and kindness. onward!

  20. Stop trying to make the EV charming, fun, cute and safe looking. I hear asshole carpetbagger real-estate clowns pointing this shit out to 20 somethings each day.

  21. So basically a mentally deranged person is continually harming the building's plants as a kind of vengeful anger performance and some people here think the note too harsh?

    ReplyDelete
  22. @JIll

er, yeah. The note is over the top. If you're hoping someone gets some "painful disease" and "suffers mercilessly" for any reason---bully for you. Humanity at its best.

Imagine if someone took a shit in that building entrance...I think heads would explode around here.

btw, a mentally sick person needs help if he/she is doing this. Who said it was a "performance"?
