Out with Euzkadi on East 4th Street

Workers have been gutting Euzkadi, the now-closed restaurant at 108 E. Fourth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue this past week…

… including removing the Euzkadi mosaic…

We're not sure exactly when Euzkadi closed. People seemed to like the tapas … which New York magazine called "traditional and boldly flavored Basque cuisine."

As for what's next … a Japanese restaurant called Benemon is expected to open here later next month. According to the application (PDF!) for a new liquor license at the CB3 website, Benemon will serve "Japanese rice bowls with small plates." Benemon is expected be open noon to midnight seven days a week.

  1. Used to go to Euzkadi back abut 11-12 years when it opened (or has it been longer?) It was a nice place for a good bottle of wine and some different tastes of interesting food and not terribly expensive. back then. (The chorizo and chocolate on bread was very nice).

But then it got called a "perfect first date place" in some review and it was quickly filled with the types we often lambast here. You knew when specialty cocktails start replacing other stuff on the menu that it's no longer that kind of place for a quick local bite with friends.

Still, we soooo don't have enough Japanese rice bowl places in the neighborhood! Thank god!

  2. The endless appetite for Japanese food amazes me!

  3. Will kind of miss the mosaic with the basque flags around the border. They had a good run.
Probably 10 years exactly. Lease is up, out you go.

  4. I'm with sam, that was a great mosaic. Lotta work went into putting that together, sorry to see it cemented over.

  5. Loved Euzkadi circa 2008-2011. What a great place! Great staff, very fun nights with music early in the week. Tapas was very fine and they had a great early bird recession special. I really loved this place and the staff, Voyo, Paz, Danielle, Hila were fantastic.
    A special place.
