Exactly one month ago today we heard about the three new retail clients coming to 51 Astor Place/the IBM Watson Building/Death Star — Bluestone Lane Coffee, Chop’t Creative Salad Company and Flywheel Sports.
The first of the incoming trio's signage has arrived on the Fourth Avenue/Astor Place side at Ninth Street this week… Chop't! Per the window dressing, the quick-serve salad place will be "Chopping this Winter." (Wonder if they do firewood too?)
These new tenants will join what's looking like the World's Largest CVS here in MiSo.

NO. You may NOT have your fucking dressing on the side.
ReplyDeletesomebody has to cut your food for you
ReplyDeleteGoing to open up a place next door called "Chew'd" whereby I spit the food into your mouth as though you were a baby-bird.
ReplyDeleteOnly 43 more chopping days until Christmas.
ReplyDeleteGreat, Grieve. Don’t get choppy.
ReplyDeleteI’ve got a bad feeling about this.
So this is how liberty dies…with chopping.
Your chopping determines your reality.
Chop. Or Chop not. There is no try.
Your eyes can deceive you. Don’t trust them when chopping.
In my experience there is no such thing as Chop't.
I find your lack of faith in chopping disturbing.
It's a trap!

ReplyDeleteYou gotta extend that thinking bro.....
Chew'd & Screw'd
For sure the Google and Facebook drones will love every new shop there.
ReplyDeleteGotta love gentrification and homogeny. :) This is the new NYC kids.
ReplyDeleteChop't offers a fantastic fast food option: Healthy, variety, customize, convenient, real food. Too bad its located in Death Star which tolled the death of Astor Place, St. Marks, and the East Village all in one monolithic stupifying soul crushing architectual fell swoop. The patient could not be revived.
ReplyDeleteChop't creates an insane amount of waste for a product you could make in your house with minimal effort for a fraction of the cost. And no excuses like how you don't know how to cook something - it's salad - almost all animals on the planet are capable of making salad. Seriously, a monkey masturbating at the zoo can make a salad.

Oh, that's how he gets the "special sauce"?
I'm not a fan of Chop't—actually, I've never even been to one yet—but this one isn't going to be the first. If their greens aren't organic, that's a deal-breaker.

ReplyDeleteTolled the death of the East Village? What do you mean? What about the glass apartment building on Astor Place, the Cooper Union building fronting 7th to 6th Street on Cooper Square. It has become the common reaction to denounce the Death Star building. What about the architectural "adjustments" to the front of the Public Theatre? If the food is good at Chopt and the prices are reasonable, in spite of the snipping on this blog site, it will probably survive--same with Bluestone Lane Coffee. There is consistent knee jerk reaction here to anything that smacks of a "chain" store. It's getting to be a boring and meaningless mantra.
11/12 9:16: Chew'd is a great concept. Add a velvet curtain inside the front door, maitre d', and private chewing rooms, and you'll have a hit!
ReplyDelete@7:56 PM: I thought the ability to make a salad is what separates man from the other primates. I guess I should spend more time at the zoo.
ReplyDeleteSo why is this building called the Death Star? It's not spherical. And isn't it more attractive than that pukey yellow industrial building that was there?
