This past Friday, Shane Duffy, an Army veteran and co-owner of SD Squared, an NYC-based home renovation and design firm, teamed up with The Home Depot to transform the Pitt Street studio of Jim "The Mosaic Man" Power (and Jesse Jane).
The project is part of the Celebration of Service program, which has converted 22,000 homes and has invested more than $80 million to provide safe housing to veterans, per the news release.
On Friday, the team, including Julie Powell, an East Village resident and Home Depot store associate/volunteer along with Duffy, created a custom mobile work station for Power to keep his tools and materials and installed shelving and storage units to maximize his space, among other things.
EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped the Lower East Side apartment of Power, a veteran, on Friday afternoon to check in on the progress…

Power said that he was happy and grateful for all the work done on his space ... and he had more plans for new mosaic and artwork for the future.

Wow, that is a really nice thing to see. A decent upgrade of living/work space for a guy who deserves it.
The jaded side of me thinks, "Wow for some basic Home Depot upgrades, someone like Shaoul or ICON would jack up the rent 2000%"
Super cool! A good deed for someone who deserves it!
Anyone know how I can get broken plates and such to Mr. Power for his mosaics? I've been saving them for him, but haven't seen him around for a while. (And thanks to those upgrading his space, it looks great!)
So glad to see something nice done for Jim Power, who has done so much to beautify this neighborhood! More "power" to ya, Jim!
Thanks VERY much to the Celebration Of Service folks, and both the HD and SDSquared volunteers.....and thanks to Jim and Jesse for helping everybody keep a smile on the dial.
Keep on chooglin'!
A big Shout out to all on this fine Project... And to Jim, thank you for your service...
GOJIRA, JUST LEAVE THEM ON THE CURB OUTSIDE MY BUILDING. THANKS.
Here's a short documentary about Jim Power, his art, his struggles, and the Lower East Side of 5 years ago. Enjoy! https://vimeo.com/9925934
