The East Village is down 2 Chase branches

As we noted back in August, the Chase branch on Avenue A at East Second Street and the location on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place would close after business on Nov. 12.

So, uh, being Nov. 13, those branches are now closed...

According to Chase, the branch at 130 Second Ave. will consolidate with the location two blocks to the north at No. 156 while the Avenue A outlet will merge with the branch at 106 Delancey.

The Chase at 156 Second Ave. recently renovated the lobby, adding new ATMs and decorative lighting...

The asking rent on the Second Avenue Chase space is $72,000 a month, per the Icon Realty listing. The rent is available upon request for the Avenue A storefront.

Feel free to leave your favorite memories of these Chase branches in the comments.

  1. Once, when our tennis club was closed for emergency repairs, I used the 130 Second Avenue location for my children's lessons. I asked Ralph Lauren to decorate the space for the morning. The club pro made good use of the space despite the objections of the customers waiting in line. I later rewarded the staff there by letting them pet the dressage ponies we brought in. Good times, good times.

  2. renovated to remove tellers
    makes sense
close a bank branch down the street and take away half of the tellers at the remaining branch
that decorative lighting will help a lot

  3. ...and then there's the missing link of Second Avenue Deli. Perhaps the bank could offer tiny cups of soup while customers wait on lines.

  5. This is great. It's really nice to see a bank close, especially a Chase...since they are on every fucking corner. Good riddance!

  6. @ blue glass. The 156 branch had 2 ATMs and who uses tellers these days? I'm glad they're adding more arms, but would still prefer that was still 2nd ave deli.

  10. david - who uses tellers these days?
    i do.
i think of tellers as human beings with jobs, not programmed robots.
tellers can answer questions, allow you to have choices, give you an envelope or a paper clip, and they are employed human beings doing their job.
i prefer to wait on a line to deal with a human than to wait to use a machine.
    that should be my choice.

  11. Couldnt they have all consolidated into the Second Avenue location, which is an original bank building, and re-open the Second Avenue Deli where it originally was on Tenth Street? Instead, looks like they're going to demolish that former Second Avenue-St. Marks site as an offering to their greedy god.

  12. I always go to the tellers, if it's during open hours. I also go to the checkout people in supermarkets, instead of the self-checkout aisles.

With these two closing, there are only two left in the entire East Village. Luckily, there are Chase ATMs inside Duane Reade, so at least I'll be able to avoid ATM fees, on those occasions when I need cash.

  13. When I started banking there in the late 70s, it was called Federal Savings Bank, or something like that...then it turned into a Dime Savings Bank...then into Washington Mutual....then into Chase. But it always had GREAT customer service. I really hope nobody is losing their job.
