Here on the corner of Lafayette and Great Jones, a 9-story office building is now in the works for the 50-foot-wide lot...
According to New York Yimby, who first reported on this development, 363 Lafayette St. will feature 8,325 square feet of community facilities and 27,743 square feet of commercial space.
Per NY Yimby:
Retail and a lobby will occupy the first floor, followed by a mix of community facilities and offices on the second and third floors, and the remaining six floors will be devoted to office space.
We wonder if this property will be marketed directly to NYU, which owns dozens of buildings on the surrounding blocks. In that case, the community space could become classrooms, or possibly offices for a non-profit.
As some of you might remember, this corner was home to the Jones Diner from 1938 to 2002...

The elevator and stairwells with take of half of this footprint, but then again there is a lot of demand for office space in mid-town south.

ReplyDeleteSpeaking of eyesores, it's also time to limit the oversized outdoor advertising. That billboard is hideous. Such signage does not belong in a city. Keep it on the highways or other areas where it can be seen by passing airplanes, satellites, and aliens.
We should go the Sao Paolo way and simply ban outdoor advertising.

Amazing they can fit a building in this space. There is an artist who has a studio that I suppose will be covered over. Chuck Close?

ReplyDeleteAnon. 11:44, the only reason this lot is an eyesore is because some idiots allowed the Great Jones Diner to be torn down. Had that remained, you would have had that nice little building dispensing good food all these years.
5:58pm was Great Jones Diner at least 75 years old at the time of closing? If it was the owner could've got landmark status for it. What a shame if it was 76 years old or older.
